Looking at how popular the giraffes thread was I thought I'd create on for lions. We'll start off with African lions in the UK

Yorkshire Wildlife Park:
Maria (Simba's mum) passed away last year. Ares is also still at the park and lives with Julie.

I'm not sure on exact ages but I believe the lions arrived in 2010 so all are at least 13 years old.
 
Given 'African lions' aren't a single subspecies, how much do we know about the origin of these animals? Are they all southern lion Panthera leo melanochaita in its broader definition, or generic zoomix animals?

Mostly zoomix (including a few which are claimed to be pure subspecific), with a smattering of nominate, and some krugeri.

Nominates as in P. leo leo in its modern, broader sense? I'm guessing these are from Central African stock?
I suspect I know the answer already but are the different subspecies/origins managed separately or are the lineages all just introgressing into zoomix at this point? Any pure groups?

I meant ones being claimed as "Barbary" which are basically a zoo-mix of northern and central African races but exclude Asiatic input. I have some reservations about the lumping of lion taxa incidentally :p

I don't think there's all that much management - for instance last I heard some of the West Midlands animals were pure but horrifically inbred, and others were definite zoo-mix.
 
Linton have six lions, four on show two off. Zuri (2006) and Safina mentioned and four others.

Kali (male) and Nabulaa (female) (2015) are the other two on show next to parents Zuri and Safina.

Riziki (male) and Karla (female) (2003) are off show.

Sad news that it was Sweet Pea that's died, although on Animal Park it was stated that she was known to be quite an aggressive/grumpy female.

Nevertheless sad news but thanks for the confirmation.

Ah OK, thank you for the info. I considered the 'barbaries' but was unaware there was no southern/eastern input in their heritage.

I'd be surprised if anyone doesn't have some reservations about the New Cat Taxonomy :p though I think the tiger deliminations (or lack thereof) are a lot shakier.

Anyway, I'll stop derailing this thread now. :p

Obviously the pride of 3 listed for Paignton are in fact still in Newquay. Apparently, Avian Bird Flu restrictions are now holding up the move?

Be interesting introductions in that big enclosure at port lympne … gonna take a strong minded male to go in there given how fiesty lily and her girls are.

wonder what will happen to the two boys?.
