Chester Zoo African Painted Dogs with Curator of Mammals, Tim Rowlands

I have to say I am so looking forward to this one. As Stuart will be able to say I can name most of the Dogs and was having fun saying there name which I guess have been forgotten already? lol.

I can also name them 'behind that bit of grass', 'over there by that rock', 'possibly behind the other one' - yes I know them all!

Well I have to say what excellent camouflage they have, we saw one (or more) from one window and so we knew where they were when we moved round the other side yet they still took a bit of spotting. Amazing really.

Don't think me & the dogs have a big future since their 'busy' time is prime orangutan quality time.

Haha well my prime time with any other animals is postponed for a fair while lol. I am helping the study of them :). First two days(Thursday - Friday) has been spent spotting identifying patterns on there coats to assign names(only the Females had names actually assigned and the boys had names but not assigned to an individual). I think I have a fair few more weeks/months getting to know them coming up lol. Just glad my part is relatively easy lol.

As for "busy time" just on two days it varied greatly. On Thursday they running around all day and yet Friday as Stuart will back up they were only active for a short period just after 2pm. I think till they have a set pack order it will be up and down.

They were indeed fairly inactive for most of Friday, although everything is relative (we're not talking giant pandas here) as there was still considerable movement and carcass sharing.

They livened up considerably after 2pm and when we made a final pass at 5pm, they were everywhere, running in a pack from one half of the exhibit to the other and bounding in and out of the water under the "creaky" bridge.

I like the bounding in and out of the water shots - loved them - thought at one point I was going to get one of them right under me on the bridge - I think they can see their reflection in the wall under the bridge? what fun.

As far as I'm aware, there isn't a wall under the bridge, only mesh divisions between the dogs and the roan. Looking at the construction photos I can't see a wall either, the water just flows between the two areas.

Yep it is just a mesh on both sides that separates the two enclosures. I have yet to see both the dogs and roan at the water at the same time. I think there the photo's I most want to get lol.
