Akron Zoo Akron Zoo 2020 News

One of those species is Sumatran tigers after all.
But yes, the exhibit complex includes substantial visitor space.

I applaud them for that, although the video showed a massive amount of guest space. Which is similar to what I thought about the lion complex, that was mostly guest space/ "train" space/ goat yard. Especially when the last 2 complexes have been so mammal centric.

It is on a hill. The hill has caused issues. It is also landlocked by zoo on three sides. Plus Wild Asia is being built along with the now opened Pride of Africa. I could see an expansion to the north someday like the proposed second phase for Pride of Africa.

I understand that and obviously meeting ADA standards requires a lot of ramps. Yet they definitely could have found space for some bird aviaries or outdoor tortoise yard (as they have Asian box turtles already) for example. Same thing goes for the Pride of Africa complex that is flat compared to Pride of Africa, and only featured 3 non-domestic species.

These exhibits accomplish quite a lot - both for animal exhibits, conservation education, and potential rental income - for a rather small budget. A hallmark of Akron's management self-control.

The new goat area replaces the former Farmland and Wild Prairie barn area. A small bird habitat has been mentioned previously. You have to remember, these two projects were originally one project in the Wild Asia area. I rather have too much open space in this area than everything crammed into it.

What are the three species each featured in the Wild Asia and Pride of Africa complexes? I don't have access to that Facebook link for some reason.

Pride of Africa: African lion, Speke’s gazelle, white stork, crested guineafowl, African pygmy goat, Nigerian dwarf goat

Wild Asia: Sumatran tiger, red panda, white-cheeked gibbon

Pride of Africa: African Lion, Speke's Gazelle, White Stork, Crested Guineafowl and Goats

Wild Asia: Red Panda, Sumatran Tiger, White Cheeked Gibbon

The zoo just told me that the bird habitat in Wild Asia was removed from the final plan. The Wild Prairie barn area will be replaced after Wild Asia opens.

It's a shame that despite the SSP coordinator's best last-ditch efforts, the future of this species in North America is not bright. Enjoy them while you can, folks.

Agreed, sadly they have multiple things working against them. A small starting population, lack of interest in exhibiting deer, and narrow climatic range. I hope things can get turned around for them, but as you said it's not a bright future

I need to get out to a zoo that has them in the near future, to at least tick them off my life list.

This is why I appreciate zoos like Akron that have lesser known species like musk deer, Speke’s gazelles, and blue-eyed black lemurs. They are letting the general public see species they may never have heard of otherwise.

If the November tax levy passes....
