Akron Zoo Akron Zoo News 2013

A Birth Announcement From The Akron Zoo:

A rare pygmy slow loris has been born for only the second time in our history! Currently the baby is being raised by its mother off exhibit in our Animal Care Center. The pygmy slow loris is a highly threatened primate and listed as a vulnerable species. The baby, a male, was born August 21, 2013 and weighed just 21 grams. According to the zoo’s Veterinarian Staff the baby has been thriving and currently weighs about 185 grams. The baby was the first for the mother Casey. Frank, the baby’s father, also fathered the first pygmy slow loris that was born at the zoo in 2008.

If you live in Summit County, don't forget to vote FOR Issue 3 to support the Zoo on Nov. 5th. It's not a tax increase and will allow the Zoo to continue it's conservation mission.

Thank you to Summit County voters for the landslide passage of Issue 3 last night. More animals, more exhibits, more education, and renovations are on their way over the next seven years thanks to your vote and your support. Thank you!!!

What exhibits do they have planned?

What exhibits do they have planned?

Tiger Valley renovations and additions are likely coming plus another new area added as well. They are still in the planning stages. I expect the zoo to discuss the plans for the future in the coming months.

The coyotes are on exhibit, but they like still getting used to the exhibit. It was actually easier to see one of them from the red wolf exhibit. The waterfall exhibit is empty again. The birds are in the flamingo exhibit. The flamingos are not on exhibit. The bat building is closed for renovations. I am trying to find out more. The seahorse babies continue to grow. The gift shop is under renovation and is currently closed.

The coyotes are brother and sister. The gift shop should reopen by the end of this week. There are some minor modifications going on in the bat building and should reopen soon.

The long awaited last piece to the zoo’s popular Mike & Mary Stark Grizzly Ridge exhibit is now in place. Two coyotes are on exhibit and we need your help to name them. Please vote for your favorites chosen by the Akron Zoo Staff. The names chosen all have Native American origins. The coyotes, one male and one female, are siblings.

Please vote for your favorite male name and your favorite female name from the list below:

Male names:
Dasan (duh-sahn), which means 'chief'
Shilah (shy-luh), which means 'brother'

Female names:

Adany (uh-dah-knee), which means 'timber' or 'woods'
Kaliska (kuh-lis-kuh), which means 'coyote chasing deer'

Thank you for voting! Stay tuned for the winning names, which will be announced soon and don’t forget to visit the coyotes!

Kami's Home, Plus Bat Building News

From the zoo's Facebook page:

The Akron Zoo will be saying goodbye to one tiger and welcoming back a familiar face. Berani, the zoo’s current Sumatran tiger, is headed to the Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens in Florida. Kami, who was previously at the Akron Zoo in 2009, has returned and is now on exhibit.

The zoo has told me that the bat building will reopen in the next week or so. One of the noticeable changes is the fact that the exhibit space has been painted. I will let you know if I notice or hear of anything else.
