From the zoo:

The new bird in the waterfall pond is a scaly-sided merganser. In the exhibits in the bat building the new frogs are blue and yellow mantellas.
 
From the info I have been able to gather, the zoo will open a new region likely in 2019 and a renovated region in 2020. If you think about it, it is not hard to figure out. One of the species does not belong in this region, so they need to be relocated before work can be done. Details to come.
 
The Akron Zoo is looking at making an announcement on the next expansion project sometime in early spring 2018.
 
Our snow leopard cubs will be heading to their new homes soon! Altai, one of our males, will be heading to the The Buffalo Zoo tomorrow and Asha, our female, will be leaving for the Central Park Zoo on Wednesday, Sept. 28. The cubs are part of the Species Survival Plan and will hopefully one day be able to breed at their new homes.

Layan will continue to be on exhibit daily in the mornings and Shanti in the afternoon.

The Akron Zoo is currently planning for an exciting new exhibit, Pride of Africa. This new area will feature new habitats for African lions, gazelles, storks and a new goat feeding area. The train path will be expanded and there will be more opportunities for hands-on learning and family fun.

We are likely not to get a confirmed species list until spring. It will open in 2019 and the Tiger Valley replacement will then come in 2020. Pride of Africa will primarily be located on new land and will connect to the zoo in Farmland which it will also take over. The theme will be a Maasai village.

Your Akron Zoo recently broke its single-day attendance record during Boo at the Zoo – twice! On Saturday, Oct. 21, our attendance numbers were 8,196 and on Sunday, Oct. 22, the zoo saw 7,728 guests. The previous record was 7,550 guests, which was set last year during Boo at the Zoo on Oct. 23, 2016.

Records were set for the number of trick-or-treaters as well, with 3,162 and 2,854 treaters on Oct. 21 and 22 respectively.

We also saw our second-highest attended Boo at the Zoo with 27,773 visitors attending over a six-day period. The highest attended year was in 2016 with 29,938 guests for Boo at the Zoo.

Sensory Inclusive areas are now on map. Pride of Africa will go next to Farmland and Grizzly Ridge.
 
Several new species have joined Curious Creatures. A porcupine pufferfish is in one of the flamboyant cuttlefish exhibits. Sea apples and a shrimp species has joined the garden eel and knifefish exhibit. Other zoo additions include a new species of fish in the bamboo shark exhibit in Komodo Kingdom and a eastern screech owl exhibit featuring three owls next to the ring-necked pheasant exhibit in Grizzly Ridge.
