Jasper, offspring of previous Akron Komodo Dragon Charlie, has arrived at the zoo.

From the Zoo's Instagram:
Say hi to our new Komodo dragon! Jasper is four years old and he has a pretty cool story that you're definitely going to want to check out!

Jasper might be new here, but he has several connections to the Akron Zoo. Draco, our previous female Komodo dragon, was his aunt. His mother, Charlie, lived here between 2012-2016, before she moved to the Chattanooga Zoo based on breeding recommendations from the Komodo Dragon Species Survival Plan (SSP).

After Jasper hatched on Aug. 4, 2019, it was discovered via DNA testing that Jasper and his two brothers were reproduced through parthenogenesis. This is a type of reproduction where the female is able to produce offspring without male fertilization.

Jasper joins our male Komodo dragon, Padar. As Komodo dragons are solitary, the two males will alternate their time in the public habitat. Jasper will begin exploring his new habitat in the next few days, and the windows will be covered with paper with a few holes to peek through. This will allow him to adjust to his new home and as he acclimates, the paper will be taken down.

Jasper and Padar will be easy to tell apart. Jasper, as a young Komodo dragon, is small compared to Padar - he weighs 10 pounds and is a little over four feet long. Adult Komodo dragons can reach up to 10 feet in length and weigh, on average, between 150-300 pounds. #komododragon #akronzoo

Was looking at the zoo on Google Maps, and gotta ask - does the zoo own the land highlighted in red? I know they have the old Perkin Drive, but I wasn't sure how far out it goes.

The image below shows the area that will be involved in the Pride of Africa expansion. It is around 14 acres. The image is from the zoo, so I know it is correct.
