Akron Zoo Akron Zoo News 2025

From the zoo's Facebook - Tai Lung, the zoo's snow leopard will be moving to the animal hospital starting 4th of July weekend to allow for the snow leopard exhibit renovations.

This is just the beginning. Penguin and waterfowl pond water system renovations are coming. The primate building will get an upgrade. When that is complete, the zoo will have monkeys (that are not tamarins) for the first time since the zoo had langurs almost two decades ago Maxene's Asian Trail.

What choice of primate species will Akron Zoo acquire for the new Primate Building?

Notes from todays short, very rainy, visit:

  • Hyacinth macaws are back in legends of the wild. Ladys amherst pheasant is still at garden place.
  • Red Wolves are off exhibit.
  • Birds seem to have been removed from the RainForest Exhibit in Komodo Kingdom. Only saw the fish, turtles, and tamarins today.
  • Snow leopard, red panda, and tufted deer were no shows. Mixed Asian exhibit was empty as a result.
  • Spekes gazelle signage has been removed in Africa. Wasn't able to find out if the gazelle died or was transferred out.

If what I have heard, the zoo is changing for one unique species to another. The species image is on the map. I noticed it when the new maps came out.

I do not know what all is going to change in their species wise yet, but I know they just joined an SSP. For now, I will say it is a New World Monkey species. More species could be coming. I know two of the lemur species are being phased out at the zoo.

I don't think I ever saw the Langurs in Tiger Valley. I just remember there being a playground by the closed exhibit.

Notes from today's visit (6/21)
  • Former frog exhibit in Komodo Kingdom has been removed.
  • Sundara the new red panda was on exhibit. There is a temporary banner in front of the exhibit to give her space. Was also told by an Asia employee that Lulu the red panda is no longer leaving the zoo and will instead rotate with Sundara.
  • Tai Lung the snow leopard was a no show. I'll have to come back one more time before he moves into the hospital.
  • Was told by a volunteer the new hoofstock species will be on exhibit “soon” in Africa.
  • Grizzly bears, red wolves, tufted deer, and coyotes were all no shows.

Because of a fundraising letter I received from the zoo today, I feel like I can give a clue to the jaguar replacement. It will be a big cat.
Seems like they'd need to combine both the jaguar and mara exhibits if they want big cats for space wise. Unless they mean a medium cat like an Ocelot or clouded leopard

I wonder if Komodo Kingdom will also recieve renovations since it also opened in 2005, so its turning 20 along with Legend

Areas of it have previously been renovated over the years. The only thing that may change is Curious Creatures. But with the current schedule, I am not sure if that would be done until these three areas are complete. Legends has not dramatically changed since 2005. Only minor renovations.

Big cat, out all year, not from the Americas. Sounds like it could an Amur Leopard.
That was going to be my other guess, but I would perfer to see the exhibit expanded if they are doing Amurs. Maybe expand into the Mara exhibit next door or the play area? Plus the changing of the amazonian temple theme.
