Akron Zoo Akron Zoo News 2025

New Akron Zoo map. Jaguar habitat is now a bird habitat. Probably cinereous vulture. Their old habitat will get a new species. Madagascar Building is now the Primate Building. The yard in Pride of Africa says African Hoofstock and not just Speke’s Gazelle. Hoofstock image is not a Speke’s Gazelle.

Must be a duiker getting added! Overall nothing disappointing on the new map aside from maybe vultures taking over the jaguar habitat. Now, I don’t think any facilities in Michigan or Ohio have jaguars. Is the closest Mesker park and Louisville now?

I'm going to visit Akron this week so I'll see what bird is in the old Jaguar exhibit. Personally I was hoping for another cat but this may be temporary as Legends is being renovated soon.

On a side note, as a graphic designer this map is.... yikes. Definetly perfer the old one where it was easier to see what's where and such. Too much green/yellow green

The cinereous vultures Aegypius monachus have been a recent addition and more or less allowed Akron Zoo to acquire an adult pair from another zoo (with another pair of its own on site).

We are getting a new pair of vultures. The lone female is moving to be paired with a new male. The vulture move to jaguar is temporary because they will move to giraffe when it opens in 2028. The former vulture habitat will likely be filled with a mammal. Some renovations will be needed for this species.

I wouldn't be surprised if the Snow Leopards get both halves of that exhibit space.

Am I missing something here? The pair I mentioned was only recently on transfer to Akron Zoo! You are talking of a lone cinereous vulture ... and I wonder what her name is, her age and previous captive history! Any further informaton on that?

Bindi is the current female Cinerous Vulture at Akron. Irv, the male, passed away last year shortly after arriving.

Damn, what a bloody shame. The pair did arrive from Denver Zoo in 2023/24 right (or not)?

Any clues as to the replacement (the AZA program for the species has quite a few participants ..., which is good!)?

It will be a new pairing I believe. For the former vulture habitat, the zoo has joined a new SSP. If this is the species that moves in, they will certainly be able to be out in the winter.
