Bristol Zoo (Closed) Alfred postcards usa

Morning,

Supposedly, when US GIs were stationed in Bristol, they sent thousands of photographs back to their families at home. I'd love to be able to find at least on of these stashed somewhere.

Anybody have any ideas?

I assume the 'Alfred' that you're referring to is the famous gorilla ‘Alfred’ who was at Bristol Zoo between 1930 and 1948.

Bristol Zoo postcards depicting ‘Alfred’ are not uncommon – I have about a dozen or so different ones – I suggest you search on ebay for them.

(I’ve also got a postcard of the mounted ‘Alfred’ in the Bristol Museum which is wrongly captioned mountain gorilla.)

I'm glad you replied here, because I had no clue at all what the thread was about!!
 
Apologies for being rather vague!

I'm aware of the postcards of Alfred that were produced. I'd like to be able to find some which have been written on by US GIs, though, as direct evidence of their having been sent to families as souvenirs of sorts.

Long shot, I know.

Didn't know there were so many, I have about three or four, plus the 'mounted' one.
 
Surely you'd be better off posting this in the US forums as someone there would have such a postcard?
 
Hmm good idea.

Any particular forum you'd recommend? I'm rather new on here and yet to navigate around the place to any particular degree!

Try eBay click animal postcards then click world wide if you haven't already it is amazing what eBay brings up welcome to zoochat by the way flackyslegion

I look on there frequently, have only seen 'Alfred' postcards occassionally but one recent one I had never seen before went for about £10.
