Alma Park Zoo (Closed) Alma park moving to Logan

Makes good sense. They can position themselves as the "southside" zoo and get out of Australia Zoo's shadow a bit. Also much, much more convenient for Gold Coast residents than Beerwah.

Just twelve months to achieve the move and be open to the public is a huge ask.

Maybe Sea World and Dreamworld will pitch in and help?

Good luck to them.

:p Good one Steve! ;)

G'day mate.

My comment was only partly tongue in cheek!;)

Both Sea World and Dreamworld DID provide wonderful assistance to Lone Pine, for example, during the extreme weather events in January.

I don't envy the Alma Park crew the job ahead of them. We moved our entire animal population 1100 kilometres to this site so I know how nerve racking such a move can be.

I was wondering if there has been any news on the move? Have any plans been released for the site, is it larger than the current site and is there plans to expand the collection?
I see from the zoo's website a new team has been appointed.

Sorry to repeat, any further news on the relocation, tried a quick google search and nothing.

Alma Park Zoo's Logan move delayed | News, events and sport for Pine Rivers and Moreton Bay | The Courier-Mail
1 Dec 2011

The animals and staff at Alma Park Zoo will be calling Dakabin home for a while longer, after the owner confirmed the zoo will stay put longer than originally expected.

It was revealed in May this year that the popular tourist attraction, which has been in Pine Rivers for more than 40 years, would make the move to Loganholme by June 2012.

John Quinn, the managing director of Quinn Group which owns Alma Park Zoo, said the move would not happen until the second half of next year.

"Logan is a bit behind schedule but we are delighted to be staying at Dakabin until then,'' Mr Quinn said.

Mr Quinn said since the move was made public in May, people were unsure of what was happening with the Dakabin zoo, resulting in a fall in visitors.

"Unfortunately when the relocation was announced many people developed the perception that the zoo was closing down straight away,'' he said.

"But we are still going full-steam ahead with exhibitions here at Dakabin until we finally move at the end of next year.''

A new husband and wife management team Julie Seabrook and Colin Gastonbury have started their new roles this week after the manager for the past five years, Garry Connell, resigned.

Plans to relocate zoo face delays | News, events and sport for Logan | The Courier-Mail
12 Feb 2012

Alma Park Zoo's move to Loganholme has been delayed by several months, with owner John Quinn yet to lodge a development application with Logan City Council.

The open date for Logan's Alma Park Zoo which was originally set for June 2012, had been pushed back due to undisclosed reasons.

Quinn Group managing director John Quinn said the development application would be lodged in the near future, but he could not pinpoint a date.

He said he was not concerned by the upcoming local elections on April 28 affecting the development's approval process.

Council will enter a caretaker period from March 10.

A council spokeswoman said the caretaker period would have no impact on the council's ability to make a decision on the application, and would not prevent the lodgement of development applications.

The zoo's current site at Dakabin was sold to developers in late 2010.

Alma Park Zoo's relocation to the 4ha site at 4150 Pacific Highway, Loganholme, was announced in May 2011 after 12 months of negotiations with Logan City Council.

The land is Council owned and has the potential to expand to 41ha in the future.

A Logan City Council spokeswoman said although Mr Quinn had not yet lodged a development application, they were still confident the zoo would be moved to Logan.

"John is unable to continue operations at his existing location as he has sold that site,'' she said.

"The site in Logan is ... at the intersection of major highways providing excellent access for his customers across the region and from overseas and is of sufficient size to meet the needs of the zoo.''

Upon completion, the zoo is expected to house 229 animals of 50 different species.

it seems a little odd that the current site has already been sold to developers (in late 2010) and the move to Logan was announced a year ago, and yet they apparently haven't even lodged a development application for the new site!!

Yes it sounds like there have been a few hiccups in the process. I haven't heard of anyone opposing the projected move.

There are still plans to move the zoo, it will just take a few years. Best way to get updates is the new website or Facebook page.
