Altina Wildlife Park Altina Wildlife Park News 2023

Yes they are all boy puppies! Cute really 4 imported boys and first litter is 4 sons!
We are happy the first litter was a success and they are all so healthy and our female Rita is tops! Fingers crossed her sister and the other imported male have success also in future!

So how many do you have now in total? I assume one of the other males is paired with another female and then the other two males from Europe are together in a small bachelor group?

According to socials, they have 3.1 adults and 4.0 pups in the larger pack; and 1.1 adults in the smaller pack:

The larger pack consists of the alpha pair - Adrian (from the Czech Republic); Rita (from Altina); and two other males - Badu and Severus (also from the Czech Republic). They’re rearing the four male pups as a pack.

The smaller pack consists of Rita’s sister and the fourth male (imported with the above three). I’ll let @Bec.Surian confirm if there’s other dogs in this pack or whether it’s just this pair.

The four imported males came via Sydney Zoo, who received seven wild dogs in return.

A new species for Altina Wildlife Park. Two male Golden Lion Tamarins have arrived and are one of two new species that will be part of their reopened small primate complex - reported on their FB page.

Golden lion tamarin - future breeding:

Good news they’ve received two males - with the intention of sourcing females to pair with them. With the exception of Auckland Zoo, who eventually experienced success; the majority of holders in the region that have succeeded in breeding this species have held multiple pairs. It offers an on-site contingency if one half of a pair dies or a pair doesn’t produce offspring.

Altina now has Cotton-top tamarin:

Golden lion tamarin and Cotton-top tamarin are the two new additions to Altina’s small primate complex.

From socials:

Altina can proudly announce the arrival of a breeding pair of Cotton-top tamarin. Our male “Philippe” being Australian born and a brand-new imported female “Cali” from New Zealand (Auckland Zoo)!

After a month quarantine Cali will finally be meeting her new partner in crime Philippe and we can’t wait to see their relationship blossom in the coming months!

Two Slender-tailed meerkat pups have been born:

'They've surprised us': Baby meerkats return to wildlife park

It's been several years since the park has had meerkat pups after the older male became too old to reproduce - but a quick romance has led to the happy couple welcoming their new kids.

"With our older group, our male became post-reproductive. We acquired a new female about six months ago from Billabong Wildlife Park, her name is Padfoot ... now her and pop have surprised us with a new litter," Ms Surian said.

*On June 8th, the zoo announced they were holding naming rights for (1.1) slender-tailed meerkats that were born. These meerkats were born earlier than the (1.1) meerkats already reported on, but also have the same parents. Does the facility keep multiple names for their meerkats, or did they/I make a mistake?

For clarification (Slender-tailed meerkat litters):

If the two litters have those birthdates (1.1 born 09/03/2023 and 1.1 born 26/04/2023) then they can’t share the same mother. The age difference between the litters is 48 days and gestation for this species is 70-77 days.

Details thus far are:

1.0 Unnamed (09/03/2023) Bop x Padfoot
0.1 Moony (09/03/2023) Bop x Padfoot

1.0 Brian (26/04/2023) Unknown x Unknown
0.1 Amber (26/04/2023) Unknown x Unknown

On May 12, Altina Wildlife Park posted a photo of a heavily pregnant meerkat on their socials, noting she was pregnant. This was 64 days after the birth of Padfoot’s March 9 litter, so I expect we’ll also be hearing of a litter born to Padfoot late May in a few weeks.

Brian and Amber were definitely apart of a different litter.

It's interesting as in early May the following article ('They've surprised us': Baby meerkats return to wildlife park) mentions the litter was the first in several years. I assume this is referring to Bop and Padfoot, with Bop recently being transferred in from another facility.

The younger pair is then possibly sired by Bop as well; maybe mothered by one of Padfoot's daughters?

The eldest male apart of the first litter was named 'Baylee' too.;)

The mystery deepens as the litter in that article (May 12) are mentioned to be Bop and Padfoot’s first litter, which according to socials were born March 9 - yet the pups in that photo clearly aren’t two months old. They look like pups that have freshly emerged from the burrow. Since pups emerge at 2-3 weeks and the second litter was born 16 days prior to that article, it was either a photo of the second litter or an outdated photo.

I don’t know details of what other females besides Padfoot are at Altina, but I’d assume she’s in a seperate group as while multiple females conceiving following the formation of a new group is common, pregnant females (both the alpha and subordinates) typically kill other female’s newborn pups - and it appears there’s now been three births in March, April and May (with the second pregnancy overlapping with the first and third).

Slender-tailed meerkat pups named:

The second litter of BOP and Padfoot have been named as follows:

1.0 Remus (08/07/2023)
0.1 Tilly (08/07/2023)

They join elder siblings, Weasley and Moony (09/03/2023).

Apparently Tilly Toke is a witch from the HP series (just searched it, but had never heard of that one) - in keeping with the family group all having HP names (BOP, Padfoot, Weasley, Moony, Remus).
