Altina Wildlife Park Altina Wildlife Park News 2024

Maned wolf birth:

1.1 Maned wolf pups have been born!

The pups have been named Muchacho and Anahi.

Congratulations to everyone at Altina on this exciting achievement!

From socials:

These gorgeous pups have been Altina’s special bundles for a couple months now!

Pictured on the Left is “Muchacho” (which means little man) this fluffy boy may of started off shy but goodness has he become a confident and boisterous young fellow! He is constantly wrestling, playing and stiring up trouble. We are sure he does all these things just to get a rise out of Anahi and his neighbours! He loves his food, anything is worth the try and even if he has eaten too much he still has to take a bite of anything different!

On the Right is our slender, confident and energetic young lady that has legs for days, “Anahi”, which means beautiful like a flower and immortal! Anahi has a very strong personality that Muchacho has slowly chipped away at making playtime much more relaxed and fun! She started off as an intolerant young she wolf but her playful loving side is showing it’s face as she grows. She secretly loves the attention she gets from Muchacho but try’s to hide the joy she gets from his rough puppy play! She is a natural leader and knows what she wants and isn’t afraid to stand up for herself despite being smaller in body size (but not height) than Muchacho!

The love we feel for these pups should be illegal! They both are very important genetically and have taken many years of breeding to get to this wonderful outcome!

New animals arriving this week:

Altina have teased some new arrivals on their socials.

Sounds like an inter-state trip to pick up a small/medium ungulate and small mammal imo. Maybe nyala and meerkat/lemur/red panda? It doesn’t specify a new species, so presumably an existing species at Altina.

On the road again…. 2 day trip …. There and back… Heading to another facility to pick up 2 different species. 1 species will be travelling back to Altina tomorrow in the trailer, the other species in a carry case in the back seat of our Ute…. Can you guess what we may be picking up??? If you see us on the road take a photo and post it in the comments with a location - it may be a good clue of what we may be coming home with. Stay tuned for updates!

Further clues:

Altina picked the animals up from Monarto Safari Park, which rules out red pandas.

I will stick with my guess for Lowland nyala for the trailer loaded species; and lemur/meerkat for the smaller species.

Since Monarto Safari Park have a surplus porcupine (Louie), it wouldn’t surprise me if she made the trip to Altina, though I’m of the opinion a travel crate in between a trailer and a carry case in size would be used.

One of the new species is indeed nyala. It’s great to hear Altina will have an opportunity to breed long term given their success in breeding numerous species.

Our very own 20th birthday present to ourselves! (And our boys).

Introducing our new girls on the block! “Akiko” & “Ro” our beautiful Nyala females all the way from Monarto Safari Park!

Altina have had 2 male Nyala for some time now and the boys “Salim” & “Bahati” (imported from New Zealand) have matured nicely.

We are Super excited to join the breeding program for this gorgeous species! The girls won’t meet the boys right away, they will be given time to get used to Altina staff and conditions first and enjoy the single life as they mature a little more.

The second species is Yellow-footed rock wallaby:

From socials:

Introductions of our newest addition are underway! The second species we acquired last week was a little boy Yellow Footed Rock Wallaby!

An endangered species we have had for a few years now! Our current male is due to retire so this little man will grow to take his place over the next year or so.

After breeding many animals for the program and sending them all around Australia we still have kept with our themed names of alcohol!
Thanks to CASELLA FAMILY WINES our major Sponsor for the Yellow Footed Rock Wallaby exhibit! If it were not for you our wallabies may not be here at Altina!

Pictured we have on the left “Italicus”, top Right “Midori”, bottom right “Rose’”and centre is our new boy yet to be named."

Giraffe birth:

From socials:

A BABY GIRAFFE!! The 6th Giraffe born in the Riverina!!! BUT……………..THE FIRST GIRL BORN AT ALTINA!

After a 15-month gestation period, “Munzi” (Mum) gave birth standing up, to a 100kg baby GIRL!!!

This precious girl, is Shaka’s (Dad’s) 2nd calf! Now giving him his “Pigeon Pair” of One Son (Bakari) & One daughter! Shaka’s bloodlines are very important to the breeding program and adding a Girl of such genetic value to this Conservation Program undoubtedly adds to how proud we at Altina already are of our beautiful new baby!

Altina transfers:

Some clues of facilities from Altina’s socials:

On the road again Drive 9 hrs to drop off 1 animal to 1 facility And Drive to the second facility 3hrs from the 1st…. Pick up a different animal from them And drive 7 hrs back home.
Hunter Valley is around about a nine hour drive from Altina, so that may be the facility where the first animal was dropped off. Sydney is 3 hours on the way back - so maybe Sydney Zoo or Taronga?

Aha, so I was correct! That would mean the new animal should be from either Sydney or Taronga.

You're correct! Altina has just posted on socials that the animal they were receiving is a new breeding male capybara, Rodney from Taronga. This would also explain why the old pygmy hippo exhibit near the binturongs at Taronga (where Rodney had been living temporarily) was empty during both of my recent visits.

@Abbey

Rodney was still there on Wednesday btw, right so he's bound for new home at Altina

There’s plans to breed from Rodney due to his genetics, which is good to hear:

From socials:

Last week Altina picked up a new Breeding Male CAPYBARA….. RODNEY!!!!

Rodney is from Imported bloodlines which will give our breeding family of capybara a new man to wiggly their eyebrows to!

I believe the males were acquired from overseas, although correct me if I'm wrong.

With Sanchez and now Rodney being in breeding situations, there will hopefully be a good amount of representation from this line.

That’s correct. Rodney and his brothers were born at Wellington Zoo. Wellington’s founder females were imported from France; with the replacement founder male (Pepe) part of the first litter born at Auckland Zoo in 2015.

Auckland’s founder male was imported (from Chester Zoo); but after merging his genes with the Adelaide line (via females Rosetta and Conseuela), this family line has become well represented regionally.
