Scheduled to open in April 2025, the Amami Rabbit Museum "QuruGuru" is located in Yamato Village on Amami Oshima island. Dedicated to the protection, research, and exhibition of the Amami rabbit—a national special natural monument of Japan—the facility can house up to 20 rabbits. A resident veterinarian will provide medical care and rehabilitation for injured rabbits, including those affected by traffic accidents, to help them return to the wild.
In addition to its role in conservation, the museum will serve as a hub for ecological research, environmental education, and public awareness, as well as a base for researchers. The name "QuruGuru" comes from an Amami dialect word meaning "deep black" and symbolizes the interconnected cycle of life.

Hirakawa Zoo in Kagoshima City and the Amami Rabbit Museum "QuruGuru" recently signed a partnership agreement for the conservation of the Amami rabbit and other rare wildlife. As part of this agreement, a male Amami rabbit named Yuwan was transferred from Hirakawa Zoo to QuruGuru, where he is now under care. Although every precaution was taken during the transfer, he showed signs of stress, leading to the cancellation of the planned welcome ceremony. Yuwan is currently resting in the treatment room at QuruGuru and is showing signs of recovery.
