Just noticed some of the recent activity on this thread, and I have some comments.
The weather in Miami is not the same all year long. The summer days at the zoo can be painful, it's true, for those not used to it but much of the rest of the year is beautiful.
One important reason why visitation is not what you'd expect for such a metropolitan area is that the zoo is in the middle of nowhere. Compare it to the Bronx Zoo which is also far from most things and has a great deal of competition from other tourist interests. I wonder if the relative visitation is much different there.
