Has announced that 4 female Raccoons have escaped from their enclosure. They are 18 months old and only arrived 3 weeks ago. It didn't say where they arrived from.

A species under UK law as 'invasive alien' too ....
hope this doesn't end poorly for Amazon World
It's lucky it's 4 females and they've escaped onto an island. Certainly not an ideal situation given how tricky they are to capture, but at least the likelihood of them breeding is minimal.

A thread already exists for this collection, not sure why a new one was necessary

Yes, they need separate licencing to hold from DEFRA independent of the Zoo Licence, but I am not sure what the penalties are. Successful prosecution under any animal related legislation, bars anyone from holding a Zoo Licence, though.
They should be pretty easy to cage trap.

One racoon was captured just before midnight, inside the zoo grounds, two others were also spotted nearby.
Yes, they would be hungry and very likely to return, and thus pretty easy to trap. Is there ANY evidence that these sporadic accidental escapes (which have always happened - I remember one being found in a local dining room having entered through the French-windows, in the early 70s) have ever resulted in established populations? They all seem to die, return home or get run over by traffic. Only in Germany where fur-farms were bombed during the war releasing huge numbers together, did the saturation method of introduction succeed in establishing the species. Mass release by animal rights activists, achieved the same in the UK with coypu and American mink.

Visited yesterday, having uploaded some photos in the gallery.

Thought I'd give a little overview of the collection for those who are interested:

Indoor rainforest:
  • First hall: free flying birds (including Bail Starling, Sunbittern, Partridge, various Finch species), one aviary (Bleeding-heart dove and another species), caiman enclosure, pond with koi
  • Second hall - freeflying birds, aviaries for Toco Toucan and Aracari, enclosure for tortoises, mixed species enclosure for Saki Monkey, Sloths, Golden-Headed Tamarins and Tamandua.
  • Third hall: large pond and freeflying birds (including duck species) and tank for Matamata and Caiman Lizard (not seen)
  • Reptile Corridor: Green Iguana, Boa and a tortoise species
  • Nocturnal area: four enclosures for Armadillo species, mixed exhibit (Sloth and Kinkajou), 2 enclosures for Lorises, mixed exhibit (Armadillo, Tamandua, Douroucouli and Sloth). Paca and Mouse Lemur were signed but not seen @dillotest0
  • Reptile/Invertebrate area with various enclosures - please see species list I've uploaded. Followed by a Finch aviary.
  • Final part of the indoor area consists of mixed aviary including Bali Starlings, Partridges, Robins and Trumpeters
Outdoor area - going round clockwise roughly:
  • Lemur Walkthrough - ring-tailed lemurs
  • Macaw enclosures
  • Racoon enclosure (previous Ocelot enclosure)
  • Capybara enclosure
  • Monkey enclosures - Titi monkey, Emperor tamarin, Red-handed tamarin, Goeldi's monkey
  • Tapir enclosure (very hard to view outdoor area due to overgrown plants)
  • Rhea enclosure
  • Red Panda enclosure
  • Wader aviary (Flamingos, ibis stilts, ducks)
  • Walkthrough Wallaby enclosure
  • Meerkat enclosure
  • Squirrel monkey enclosures
I hope I haven't missed anything major. The zoo had current species list up in the zoo which I've uploaded on the gallery. Cotton top tamarins have gone so the list isn't completely up to date. The paca isn't on there either, so unclear if the last individual has sadly gone? I'd say the bird list is also not completely up to date as I saw some species that aren't on the list.

Happy to answer any questions! Had a really nice afternoon there. Highlights were seeing the baby twins of the loris and seeing the Tamandua and Sloths being fed in both enclosures.

Thanks for this and for all of the photos. Nearly 10 years since I last visited so a great deal has changed.

I just wanted to confirm that you didn't see the plate-billed mountain toucan?

I had been considering a visit, but without this big draw I'll probably give it a miss

No, I didn't sadly. It may be worth contacting the park to check as it's on the current bird species list but I didn't see it labelled anywhere.

They haven't had a Paca for at least a year now. I asked when I had booked a keeper day and they said they no longer hold the species. Shame they no longer have Ocelot, as they used to have Ocelot and Geoffroys Cat, but it looks like they no longer have any cat species. Did they still have four species of Armadillo ?
