DierenPark Amersfoort Amersfoort News 2021

The zoo has revealed that 2 Spectacled Bears (Tremarctos ornatus) are going to live in the former brown bear enclosure! This would make dierenpark Amersfoort the only zoo in The Netherlands with this species! The 3-year old brothers Teju and Ariba will come from a zoo in Germany. Currently the enclosure is being renovated and expected to open in the begining of Summer this year. I persume that they come from Duisburg, but I am not 100% sure, could someone confirm this?

The 2 young males are indeed coming from Duisburg.

So do I, probably they will add a lot of climbing structures. So I am wondering whether they are going to keep the elevated walkway thing in the enclosure.

Visited today. Lots of logs and climbing space! Elevated walkway is still there

A Linnaeus' two-toed sloth was born at the zoo, the gender is currently unknown. This is already the ninth baby of Europe's most succesfull two-toed sloth couple, female Amaka and male Quasimodo.

The baby sloth is slowly but surely starting to seperate from the mother, already learning to climb for itself

Also: not sure if this is old news or not, but the Black-throated monitor has died (?) and there is now a Nile monitor in that enclosure

The barbary sheep are also no longer kept, the baboon enclosure is now limited to the left-most island (if seen from the ancient city)

Does anyone know the specific species of cockroach held in de nacht?

Strange question, but I'm making some species guides for Amersfoort

Also: What other areas of Amersfoort could use a guide? So far I've got the parakeet aviary, Snavelrijk, the Waldrapp aviary, The vulture aviary in the Ancient city, the smaller terrariums in the Ancient city, the Badger den, The tortoise greenhouse, the 100.000 animal house and De Nacht

Statement on the situation from the facebookpage of Dierenpark Amersfoort:

"This afternoon we warned for two wolves running loose in our park. Therefore, according to protocol, visitors were asked to stay in indoor areas to locate the animals in peace. Meanwhile, the situation was brought under control: the two animals were located, sedated and returned to their enclosure. In the meantime, visitors have resumed their visit to DierenPark Amersfoort.

The animals were startled by short term works around the enclosure. They escaped from the enclosure through a self-dug hole at the bottom of the fence. Each animal species requires a specific form of care. This requires specific rules, including inspections of the accommodation. Each animal species requires its own way of managing: with wolves, this is done at different times than with, for example, tigers, lions and meerkats. During a recent inspection of the wolf enclosure, there were no defects to the fence and it meets the safety requirements. The pit was therefore created at very short notice. The enclosure's fence will be repaired, in the meantime the wolves stay in a separation area."

Update from the escaped wolves:

One of the escaped wolves was found dead in it's enclosure 2 days after it had escaped, the other wolf was seriously injured. The autopsy revealed underlying heart failure and minor bite wounds. The two escaped wolves had the lowest rank in the pack and keepers have frequently seen 2 female wolves acting dominantly towards the other wolves. Perhaps these females attacked the two other wolves, but this can't be confirmed. The two females have since been removed from the pack and now the pack reacts normal again.

Recently 4 more meerkats were born!

They're also planning on moving the two females to another park

Also: anti-zoo crybabies are going crazy about it

Sorry for going off-topic, but does anyone know the specific fish and turtle species in the enclosure of the African dwarf croc in the ancient city?

I sent an email to Amersfoort but they only answered with "multiple cichlid species", which was very helpful
