Amur Leopards in Europe

Good news! A new addition to the European amur leopard population :D a female cub born in Germany's Leipzig Zoo.

Your morning adorable: Let's have a party! Critically endangered Amur leopard cub is born in Germany | L.A. Unleashed | Los Angeles Times

Leipzig Zoo, Germany:

1:0 Balin, born 11.05.1988 at Frankfurt, brother of Olga
0:1 Olga, born 20.07.1990 at Frankfurt, sister of Balin
1:0 Xembalo, born 08.06.2005 at Helsinki, arrival 13.02.2007
0:1 Vatne, born 21.10.2005 at Berlin Tierpark, arrival 08.03.2007
0:1 Female cub born 24.06.2010 (to Vatne & Xembalo)

Colchester Zoo 2:1
1:0 Dende Born 2004 at Tierpark Berlin
1:0 Sayan Born 2007? at Mullhouse
0:1 Milena- Born 2006 at Marwell (to Asha & Akin)

Colchester now have only 1:1 Dende moved to a private breeder in France and did Milena have a cub before or is it just my imagination:p

Dende didn't go to France and Milena hadn't bred previously when she arrived on October
19th 2007. She was born in 2005.

Thanks for that Zooleopard but i emailed Colchester about 3 months ago asking which male would be put in with Milena and they replied saying Sayan as Dende left for a private breeder in France?

Offical word from Colchester was that he was rehomed at the Rutland Owl and Falconry Centre which has off show facilities for big cats who are not part of the breeding program. He wouldn't of been much use to a private breeder as he was castrated some time ago

I don't think the 3 young males at Yorkshire Wildlife Park have had a mention. They came from France after their mother had another cub a few months ago. I'm sure the keepers have names for them (I was once told by someone they'd been allowed to choose one) but whether they'll have those names when they finally go on show I don't know.

The three males you mention came from Mulhouse zoo.

Today, Antwerp Zoo announced the death of the male KAYA (born Rottedam 1990). The animal has been euthanized last thursday due to liver cancer.
There is now 1.0 left in Antwerp.

Does anybody know:

Sayan the male at Colchester's exact birthdate and parents?
The three males at Yorkshire names and birthdate?

Three male cubs born to Bayan and Elixa on 10.12.2009 are:
Tarass, Anadyir and Tikhon.

Same parents have now one female cub Kathanga born 14.3.2011 ;)

Does anybody know the name of female Amur leopard born 6.6.2010 at Parco Faunistico La Torbiera Italy?

What is the gender ratio for the overall european captive population? Is it male heavy?

I would love to see twycross get a female or two (or the boys to move on to a breeding situation) though I'm sure there isn't room there at the moment to just move in new cats.

Would leopards respond to the cheetah breeding plan that Chester used where the females had her choice of the males? Or do leopards need different types of management?

There is generally a larger number of males and than females in Europe something like 10-20 males more than females. Rutland falconry has a couple of males (Dende from Colchester and Artem from WHF) there's also the males at Yorkshire. I know there waiting for a female but there's a few males about the last breeding I can think of in the UK was either WHF or Marwell, after that Twycross' which had two male cubs in 2006.

There doesn't seem to be any real breedings since 2008, WHF have brought in a new male, Edinburgh's have got a pair, Cotswold have a female (Any info on her?). Yorkshire's males have just turned two years old. There's plenty of breeding options, personally I think that the first zoo to breed them for a few years would be WHF.
