Two Amur tigers arrived at AquaZoo Leeuwarden in the Netherlands at the end of April. AquaZoo has been a new holder for the Amur tiger since this year. The 7-year-old male Vadim came from Sóstó Zoo in Hungary. The 3-year-old female Aïda came from Safaripark Beekse Bergen in the Netherlands. It is the intention that they will have young together in the future. For the first period, both tigers were first allowed to get used to the new enclosures and they could see, hear and smell each other through a fence. After a while, they also swapped enclosures regularly to get used to each other's scent.
Last week, during a visit to AquaZoo, a keeper told me that the two Amur tigers had been put together in the same enclosure that morning. In the afternoon, they were separated again. As far as I know, this was the first time they were together without a fence between them, or at least one of the first times.
