Ancestor of placental mammals identified?

I'm highly skeptical of this date. Aren't there primates known from the late Cretaceous?

I also am highly sceptical of the date they give in the article

Yeah, it's all very controversial. Probably people will be arguing about this for the next couple decades at least, which is a good thing as that is how science advances.

You mean that's how people can publish papers to go to overseas/out of state conferences. ;) :D

And develop and test new hypotheses.

Sometimes I feel that this is merely a by-product of 'publish or perish': spew as much junk as possible for other scientists to write papers quashing their hypotheses, and then other scientists rebut those rebuttals, ad infinitum. More than 1.5 million peer-reviewed scientific papers are published each year - some of them have to be junk or must have been written to go to the conference in Hawaii. :D
