This week our Social Media post are all about the Southeast Asian subspecies of the Bengal Florican (Houbaropsis bengalensis blandini)
The Bengal Florican, H. bengalensis, is one of the rarest bird species in the world. The species is ranked as Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red List, and occurs only in India, Nepal and Cambodia.
The ACCB, in partnership with the
Ministry of Environment, the
រដ្ឋបាលព្រៃឈើ Forestry Administration, Cambodia of the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF), and the Wildlife Conservation Society (
WCS Cambodia) is working to conserve the approximate 159 (95% CI: 149-169) mature individuals that are making up the subspecies’ population in 2020, from extinction.
As part of the ex-situ conservation strategy developed for the species we are establishing an assurance colony (i.e. captive-breeding group) here at the ACCB. Recently we completed the construction of the first global Bengal Florican Breeding Facility, which has been made possible with the generous funding of
Mandai Nature. This facility provides a secure environment for rescued, rehabilitated, and captive bred Bengal Florican, and will allow for optimum conditions for egg incubation and the rearing of chicks."
