An Australian court in Perth has fined two French tourists on working holiday visas for filming themselves in the act of burning a small endangered marsupial with a lighter and aerosol spray can.
Thibaud Jean Leon Vallet and Jean Mickael Batrikian each racked up fines of $4000 for the igniting a 10 inch flame that burned the unsuspecting animal’s head and body on April 3 while working on Rottnest island. Though it survived, the judge called their actions “abhorrent” and could not excuse the blatant display of animal cruelty from punishment.
The quokka, one of the first mammals that Europeans encountered when they first came to Australia is a tiny marsupial creature you’d probably recognize by the smile that’s permanently affixed to its face, earning it the title of “world’s happiest animal.”
Though they reportedly expressed remorse over their decision to the judge, the men defended their character, saying “You think we’re monsters. We didn’t hurt the quokka. We have pets at home.”
Since neither of the two men were able to pay the steep fine, both reportedly paid their punishment with a night in jail according to the Australian Broadcasting Company.
