Animal Bucket List

I think Bronx put their geese off exibit but they did have them! I'm happy to know that at least 3 endemic Abyssinian animals are showcased in zoos.

You have a pair at home? Did you buy them or something?

Sorry if I'm kinda going off topic on this discussion.:p

Sadly, no.

Also, most Ethiopian animals are not showcased in zoos because of the export ban. I know that the adders were obtained using illegal methods (fake papers and such) but If a zoo does have blue winged geese that would be amazing! Does anyone know which zoo has this species?
I believe I saw a pair of blue winged geese off the monorail at the Dallas Zoo on Saturday

I've seen Blue-Winged Geese a few times. At Bronx they are currently on-exhibit in the nyala enclosure as jay mentioned above. Bronx also keeps Gelada as mentioned. I've been fortunate enough to see four Ethiopian endemics: Gelada, Ethiopian Eagle-Owl, Blue-Winged Goose, and Ethiopian Mountain Viper.

I do know how it feels to not have seen endemics from an area you're from/descended from. I'm Puerto Rican and have been to the island when I was younger but I haven't really seen any endemic species. I'd absolutely love to see Puerto Rican Amazon and Plain Pigeon (not solely endemic to the island but still).

I've only been to Ethiopia once and that was when I was in 4th grade. I didn't even get to see the beautiful highlands of my country.

I never heard of an Ethiopian eagle-owl and I know most of my endemic species. Do you mean the Abyssinian owl?

I think I'll make a new discussion talking about endemics in zoos but in the meantime, thanks for all of your responses!

Yeah, the amazon is in their reptile/small mammal exhibit. It looks like they have some sort of breeding program. The zoo mush have got the birds the same way the blue winged geese came to zoos, they were already in America before any export ban was placed.

Well Puerto Rico is a commonwealth of America so I'd imagine any importation would be easier than with a country like Ethiopia. Dallas World Aquarium has Puerto Rican Woodpecker I believe, and several zoos in Europe at least have Puerto Rican Boa. I hope to see both species sooner ot later.

I would suggest nobody is going to see Glaucous Macaw in a hurry. Think I'll settle for Whooping Crane, which is at least possible.
I actually have seen wild whooping cranes. I saw a pair fly overhead. There was only one other person with me. We were shocked to see them.

Wow, a good few too!

Chicago is about a 14 hour drive or 2.5 hour flight from my house so not the easiest place to visit for me. Funny thing is, I almost visited Chicago and Lincoln Park Zoo a few years back but things fell through early in planning.
the photo is from Puerto Rico - the zoo only has two males as advocacy birds. There's a short Youtube video below.

They seem to have only gone on exhibit very recently, so even if you had gone there a few years back you wouldn't have seen them.

Fair enough. That would explain why I never heard of them when I was looking into the zoo.

I'm much more likely to be in Puerto Rico again than in Chicago but at least my options are increasing.

someone should probably post on a LPZ thread that there are Puerto Rican amazons there...
