Melbourne Zoo animal escape???

my flat-mate was at melbourne zoo last week when keepers started ushering visitors away from the lion park; apparently because an animal,,,,not a lion had either escaped or got into the lion enclosure...
any info on this?
 
One of the gorillas escaped last week, and went to look at the elephants. Maybe that was it?

How long was he escaped for?
 
Went to a spotlight tour tonight with FOTZ. Overheard that it was a binturong that escaped from its new home in the old red panda enclosures (still very unimpressed that Melbourne is down yet another mammal species, btw). So they're all back in their previous fully-enclosed cage - which itself has had problems keeping them in.

Are the Red Pandas no more at Melbourne Zoo?
 
There is a new breeding pair of Red Panda's now on display. One was cruising around it's enclosure yesterday checking everything out, very cute.

Excellent news.

Re: the escapee - the person who said it was a binturong was a volunteer on duty at the time. Do you have more reliable info?
 
A Binturong escaped ages ago when they were relocated into the small-clawed otter enclosure. They were then moved back to the original enclosure in small cat alley and have been there ever since. I am 100% certain that it was a red panda who took a stroll, courtesy of very reliable mz source.
 
Taronga's Red Pandas used to go walkabout on occassion, many years ago. One was even found in a Mosman garden munching on a stand of bamboo!

And one girl who was particularly fond of after-hours wanderings was later named "Mee-Sing" (a corruption of 'missing').

Mee Sing...Love it! Another of the mz red panda's got out of the zoo a couple of years back, crossed a couple of main roads, and ended up in a park up a tree, where he/she was found by a couple walking their dog. Such curious little critters.
