Makes interesting reading for someone who has not visited Colchester. Just one question - what is this white bengal tiger you speak of, I have not heard of such a species ;).

Well done, Zoo Leapard for that list.:D:cool:

The White Tiger is called Sasha and he's a 14 year old male.

I believe they got bred from a rich British man who lived in India in Victorian times. They're not a natural speices of Tiger.

Sasha came in 1998 (I think) I can't remember where from he notoriously killed his mate in a failed introduction.:(

Sasha came from a small zoo in France if I remember correctly.

My point was that they are not a species of tiger at all, and therefore should not, on this list, have had the "white" included in the name (we don't describe normal tigers as Orange Bengal Tigers).

However, I think this is rather hi-jacking zooleopard's thread so I'll stop being so picky about symantics.

does anyone know the names of the new hunting dogs that arrived a few months ago and also the names of the kudu?

If anyone is visiting the zoo soon is it possible if you could have a look at some of the adoption plagues that say animals names. Many thanks if you can :D

Nope, I'm sure it's a female!

Just realised we've forgotten the Orangutans
Bornean Orangutan: Tiga
Orangutan (hybrid): Rajang

There are 7 Geladas altogether, not just 2. There is a photograph of their family tree with all their names and sexes in the Colchester Zoo gallery.

There are loads of animals missing from the list but I am not sure how many of them have names - or if they do, whether these are up next to their enclosures ...... though this seems to be info which Colchester is increasingly providing.

Off the top of my head, there are also the Colobus monkeys. There is a little family group of 3 next to the lions, ...... I think the baby is called Lloyd, but can't remember what his mum and dad are called. There's another, larger group (8 or 9 perhaps ?) opposite the cheetah enclosure. As an aside, I have always wondered why those 3 are kept separately.

There's also 5 or 6 Patas monkeys - but so far, their names aren't on display.

There are now 24 Mandrills ...... again, their names don't seem to be publicised by way of a family tree (yet) though you can also often pick up animals' names from sponsorship plaques erected near their enclosures.

Similarly, there are many more Squirrel Monkeys than 2. I think you'd need to mail Colchester or get hold of a keeper to find all their names. They do have them ...... I remember them being individually described in Zoo Days.

The male is called Apollo and the female is called Etosha. I spent ages watching them when I visited in August. Lloyd is so cute and full of mischief :D

I do know many of the names of the anmals at colchester as I said earlier in the tread I know i have missed 'obvious names' but I do know them. Thanks for the colobus names mhale (i had lloyd written doen on my notepad but couldn't remember his parents :(!

I currently would like anyone who can find the names of animals which are on the sponsorship plagues around the zoo to post their findings. Thanks to anyone who has posted any names that i have forgotton. :D

I have a few more from my visit today............. (couldn't get the names of the new Hunting Dogs though!)

Damara Zebra: Troy (M), Dot (F), Dash (F), K'tusha (F)
Greater Kudu: Grace (F) Kumu (F)
Kirks Dik Dik: Narla (M), Sien (F)
Burmese Python: Solomon, Sasha (unsure of genders)
Rhinoceros Iguana: Rico (M), Unsure of name (F)

I think that the reason for the separate group of Colobus was toimprove breeding as I'm not sure if the main group breed?

From sponsorship boards:

One of the Patas monkeys is called Pipo.

The binturong near the Pallas Cat is called Benson.

Various meerkats are listed as Otavi, Rizzo, Robie, Jake, Dave and Billy.
