Several years ago there was some debate in the zoo world as to whether or not animals should be given names (or at least given out to the public). The argument against it was that people only identify with that one individual whose name they know instead of identifying with the species as a whole. I always thought this was an idiotic argument and it just seemed intuitive to me that the more people love their local animal (which they do more if they know it by name) the more they will care about its counterparts in the wild.

Well, apparently the AZA did one or more formal studies on the topic and guess what? What any reasonable person could have assumed without a study proved to be true - people care more about the species as a whole when they identify with an individual by name at their local zoo.

So now giving out names is back in vogue with the exception of one zoo that I know of here in the USA. My local Arizona Sonora Desert Museum, which is otherwise a trendsetter, still tells visitors "our animals do not have names." Even their education animals that they let people touch they say this. Of course it is an outright lie, because most of their animals do have names to the keepers, they just do not want to tell the public form some insane reason.

At my other local zoo (Reid Park where I volunteer) we freely tell the names. When our new elephants arrived, we posted their names and a brief bio on the website. These same bio sheets are on one of the exhibit displays as pull out laminated cards. I have seen firsthand people trying to identify them and asking us which is which - it really helps with their connection to the animals. Why the other zoo in Tucson is so behind in this regard is beyond understanding.

Not really that insane. I have winessed many people using the animals name in an effort to.get a reaction from the animal, especially big cats. this can result in lower responsiveness when keepers use the animals name. i think youll find alot of zoos have a house name and a public name for animals.

I see that you got these names off of the zoo's website. This would all be good and well, but you will find that the zoo's website is very outdated. If you look, for example, the zoo still lists Bodhi (transferred to Denver) and Coco (deceased 2011), but does not list Beco (born 2009) or Hank (arrived 2011); those are just the errors within the Asian elephant list! Another of the more obvious errors is with the eastern black rhinoceroses; the website does not list Rosie, but it still lists Kijito (deceased 2011).
