Brown hyenas at Zoo Praha

Hi there,

I have been to Zoo Praha twice and enjoyed seeing the brown hyenas both times. I last visited probably 5-6 years ago. I noticed on ISIS that they have only one specimen listed. I wondered if that was accurate and if something had occurred to the groups of browns at the zoo.

Unfortunatelly, it is accurate. Last year, one pair was sent to Port Lympne, one pair was sent to Tierpark Berlin and one female died, leaving just the last lone male back here.

Orangutans at Prague.

It seems like 12 year old Sumatran orangutan 'Padang' from Chester is shortly to join Prague's orangutan group.

How many orangutans do Prague have currently, and why do they need a male like 'Padang' now? In an older studbook they are listed with 3.1 including two younger males not born there. Maybe they are not there anymore and things are different now?

Prague is at the beginning of a "big change" with their orangs. The 3.1 mentioned in an older studbook:

1,0 Kama - old male, very important genetically, but problematic personality (hand-reared), he will get a separate enclosure here and so will be retired
0,1 Upita - breeding female at best age, good mother, but she tyranised Kama at last till he collapsed, she should leave Prague
1,0 Filip and 1,0 Pagi - sons of Kama and Upita, were born at Hodonin after Prague demolished the old monkey house, they were sent to Bratislava this year

Prague awaits 1,1 young animals (Padang and ?) that should form a new breeding pair, Kama should stay here till his death alone.

Both males sent to Bratislava Zoo would be very important for the European population at large? Any idea on long term breeding plans for these? What is Bratislava up with them?

Bratislava definately wants to breed orangs in their new big house, their wish is to obtain a female and get rid of one of the males. The former Prague ape head keeper had an idea to bring Pagi (the younger but more dominant brother) back to Prague in a few years as a new breeding male, but with Padang coming now it seems unlikely. I don´t know the plans of the EEP coordinator for them.

I guess as Padang's genetic background (Perth/Bristol) isn't well represented in European zoos(only so far by his halfsister Jambi) that may be the reason he is going there.

So, Upita (breeding female orang) is going to Jersey in Sep/Oct. A new female with a baby will come in exchange to Prague from there.

Prague zoo confirms its position as leading dragon breeder
ČTK |
31 August 2010

Prague, Aug 30 (CTK) - Twenty young Comodo dragons hatched out from all 20 fertilised eggs in the Prague zoo these days, confirming its position as one of the world's leading breeders of this rare reptile species, zoo spokeswoman Jana Ptacinska Jiratova has told CTK.

In addition, the mother dragon, Aranka, has laid another six eggs now, she said.

The young dragons are very agile. They measure 40 to 45 cm and weigh 100 to 140 grammes.

Their hatching was transmitted on-line in the past seven days.

Zoo keeper Petr Velensky said the Prague zoo is a "world leader" in dragon breeding.

Apart from the fresh dragon offspring, it prides in another world rarity. Aranka has had offspring three times already, and she laid another six fertilised eggs recently, Velensky said.

Aranka laid the eggs deep under the concrete floor of the Indonesian Jungle pavilion. The keepers transferred them to an incubator. They expect the new young to hatch out in 200 days.

Comodo dragon is a very endangered species. Only some 5000 of them survive on a few islands in eastern Indonesia. Its breeding in captivity is extremely demanding.
