Prague Zoo Praha Animal news from zoo Praha

Thanks. I wondered what was up when I saw only three of them (Padang, Gempa, Mawar) this week. Kind of sad, they really bonded well with Padang.

Zootierliste is showing Prague as holding the New Guinea race of Short-beaked Echidna (Tachyglossus aculeatus lawesii). Can anyone confirm this, and is/are the specimen(s) on exhibit?

Prague and Rostock imported a group in 2011 from a dealer in Jakarta. I think the Prague ones are off-display (?)

Thanks, Chlidonias - I am clearly not up-to-date with monotreme importations into Europe! And thus my next question, assuming these beauties are off-exhibit.....to whom must I beg to get to see them when I'm in Prague in a few weeks' time?:)

from the zoo's stock-take for 2011 it seems Prague imported eight of the echidnas in late 2011 (this figure does not include the Rostock ones) but by December four of them had already died, leaving them with four. I can't find a more recent statistic to say how many they have left now.

There are still 4 Echidnas in Prague Zoo. Originally 6 were imported, but 4 of them died because of serious parasites till one month. Zoo obtained another 2 from the trader instead and they have been livining behind the scenes since. There are plans to design for them new enclosure in Indonesia Jungle House, but it won´t be in the foreseeable future. If they will be place somewhere else, I will change it here: ZootierlisteHomepage

All 3 Hippos´ve already moved into their new house. The house will open in spring next year, so there are currently no hippos on display.

from Maguari's recent photos I see that the Prague Terrarium also has New Guinea short-beaked echidnas (plural?). Are these/is this from the zoo, or from a separate import?

I'm not sure if they're the same import or not, but I understand they're part of the same co-operative project. There were 9 at the Terrarium when we visited.
