Animal Prices?

Hello,

I have heard about zoos loaning animals to each other but I have also heard of animals being sold to each other through dealers etc.
I am working on a project where I am building my own zoo. Just a problem is I can't find prices of animals. I was emailing a zoo about the price of animals and wasn't given any answers. Is this a touchy subject or why isn't this ever talked about? I was just curious if anyone had further reading on the subject or if you could help me.

Thanks!

if you google exotic pets 4 sale you will suprised as l was.

Actually sometimes it does. For instance in an Toledo Zoo article they stated, that female african go for $200,000 and $300,000.

in europe animals are about the following
Kinkajoo £1500ea
coati £1000pr
cheetah £15000 female 6 months tame
hyeana 2 types £5000 pr
a lot of the speices you ask about are high profile stud book species and so there can be no talk of money in the same sentance as consevation i think mabey you ask fo things too soon to get the most pestigious animals you need a lot of trust with other zoos
I hope my coments dot affend

Can you not aim for more common species? I really doubt the animals you list are for sale on the market (as all of the captive ones are part of the SSP or EEP).

Sure, you can hire an animal hunter to smuggle the animal for you, but is that what you want? Each animal would cost you in the million $ + league.

But since it's only a project, just dream up some spare millions and available hunters and fill your zoo with all the species you can dream of.

Let me clear something up. This is a VERY touchy subject. The information is hard to obtain because zoos do not buy most of their animals. Most animals are loaned, donated, or traded. This also shows cooperation between zoos and looks a lot better than a zoo putting a price tag on an animal. Of course most fish, insects, and some reptiles and amphibians are bought through private companies but I doubt you will find a price tag on a mammal unless you talk to someone on the black market.

Also, the zoo community wants the public to know that we do not sell animals to each other, which was more common in the early part of the century. People will have a better appreciation of zoos if they know that zoos are working together through loans, donations, and trading. Stating that a zoo bought "some animal" for "this much" is very desensitizing to the zoo and the animal.

I do understand most of these species are high profile, and endangered. Most are loaned for zoo to zoo, and there aren't any price tags. I was worried about posting this because I was sure the type of response I would get. I just want to make it clear to everyone that this isn't a real zoo. Sort of like the fantasy football, but a fantasy zoo. I was mostly interested just if some one new of numbers I could put in.

@ColumbusZoo001: I am glad your zoo doesn't tell public things like Toledo did because I think the public shouldn't be told either. The AZA Animal Exchange Database is password protected on the website for that very reason. Even though it makes my job harder in finding quotes, I can always just put them as a loan. I wonder though if the Toledo Zoo does put a price tag on an animal like an African Elephant, then what wouldn't besides even more endangered animals.

@100: Your comments didn't offend me at all. Again I want everyone to know this isn't an acutal zoo.

I found these prices on a few websites recently:
Vampire bats- 6 for $3500
Fishing Cats, breeding trio- $14700
Geoffery's Cat- $3000
Adult White Rhino- $59500
Aardwolf- $7500
Aardvark- $7000
Asian Smallclaw Otter- $6000 a pair
Spotted Hyena- $4500
Striped Hyena- $4000
Eurasian Griffon Vulture- $3000
Fossa- Call for price
Giant Anteater-$8000
Tayra- $1000 a pair
Warthog- $15000 pair
Bearded Pig-$100 per piglet

Also elephants are between $200,000-$500,000, Giraffes are $25,000-$75000 and ,if you have the money, okapi are $750,000-$1 million, but you need to go get it yourself out of the wild.

None of these prices include shipping and misc. costs.

Guessing you got most of the information from Kens Exotics. He once even had Cloud Rats which I was quite surprised. Where did you see the okapi at?

You are correct. I have also seen Pallas cats and Nile hippos as well as the cloud rats.

Most of the other info came from various exotic auctions.

Okapi I found out through someone that was seriously considering getting at least one. They also own elephants which is how I found out their price. I have also heard of facilities getting offers for at least a million dollars from foreign royalty and private collectors for okapi.

That just puts the nails on the headz so to speak! A reputable wildlife sourcing co. ... I do have my serious doubts about your source. The very fact that foreign royals and private collectors have been asking re. availability of okapi is just the give away. No SSP or EEP zoo would ever dream of selling off their okapi commercially, when all are supporting the Ituri project. Which is hardly what one can say of private collectors here ...

It is actually for that matter that most zoos do not wish to deal with wildlife trading co.s in general. Besides these prices are highly inflated and do not reflect justly on the coop captive-breeding programmes accredited zoos are committed to and participate in.

For birds and reps/amphibs the market is more diffuse .... though. ;)

Yet, I do feel zoos should/ could be less discerning when confiscees are involved, even in country of origin and ... thus do not wish to touch them ... not being able to re-release for wildlife disease risk et al ... the confiscees are lost on the entire gene pool and will *** in sub-standard acco for all eternity. :(

I've seen his site. He was claiming to have bottle fed striped hyena pups (?). I found this odd. Is this suggesting that they'd be suitable pets? I hope not. I'm surprised such a business exists on such a high profile level in these times.

He actually doesn't breed many of these animals he is actually a broker. I was suprised too. He has advertised many large and rare exotics. I am just wondering where are they coming from? Especially animals like Cloud Rats, Pallas Cat, etc.

He tries to broker animals for Animal Source Texas. I'm not sure he actually moves any of those animals listed. I mean come on who actually looking for a white rhino, hyenas, fishing cats, etc. are actually going to search the web on exotic pet sites? Even Animal Source Texas advertises animals before they actually have them. So in the long run he's advertising an animal that he knows a guy who knows a guy that thinks he can get one......probably not going to happen.

I believe he only breeds servals, cavies, and prarie dogs. He also has wallabies, but I'm not sure if he breeds them. As far as the White Rhinos, Hyenas, and Cloud Rats I'm not sure who buys them. I can only guess zoos, and private collectors with lots of money. Does Animal Source breed these animals? I have also seen Nile Hippos, Syrian Brown Bear, and Big Cats. Do they have all of these at their facility or do they import some?
