I expected something like this to already have been done, but after quite a bit of searching the forums, I couldn't find anything like it.

What animals do you wish could see, but you have never seen before? The "Dream Zoo" thread made me think of this, but its a different topic.

For canids, I've never seen Bush Dogs or Maned Wolves, which are very unique dogs, and they aren't commonly seen in zoos.

For cats, Cincinnati Zoo filled out most of my wants, but I've never seen African Leopards or Servals.

And as far as bears go, I've always wanted to see a Sloth Bear. They're the one species I've never seen. I've seen The Philadelphia Zoo exhibits one, but I was disappointed, as it wasn't on exhibit on my visit.

Lastly, I've ALWAYS wanted to see a tapir or a capybara. They're common in many zoos, but not once have I've been to one exhibiting these.
 
Cincinnati zoo has servals. they use them in the cheetah encounter show. and columbus zoo has african leopards dont they???? :/
 
I've never seen the servals at Cincinnati. I didn't even know that had servals!

I knew Columbus have African Leopards, but every time I go, I never see them.

Of the five zoos holding the species in the USA, the nearest places to you with Bush Dogs are:

Detroit Zoo with 0.2 individuals
Zoo Atlanta with 2.0 individuals
Little Rock Zoo with 5.3.1.5 individuals

Of the 28 collections in the USA holding the species, the nearest places to you with Maned Wolves are Little Rock Zoo with 2.0 individuals and Smithsonian National Zoo with 1.0 individuals. There are a lot of collections with the species in Arkansas, Missouri and New York, strangely.

There are over twenty zoos in the USA holding this species - the nearest five major zoos to you holding this species are:

Brookfield Zoo hold 1.1
Akron Zoo hold 1.1
Cleveland Metroparks hold 1.0
Smithsonian National Zoo hold 1.2
Philadelphia Zoo hold 0.1
 
I've been to the Smithsonian National Zoo, and I didn't see the Sloth Bears or Maned Wolves. I simply didn't see them in the exhibit.

Same with the Philadelphia Sloth Bear situation.

As far as cats in the US go that I want to see, here goes the list;
Sumatran Tiger- Not sure where nearest specimens are.
Amur Leopards- Currently Franklin Park Zoo is the closest but my home zoo will be acquiring them soon.
African Leopards- I believe Maryland Zoo is closest.
Black-Footed Cat- Not sure where nearest specimens are, might have seen them at Bronx but can't exactly remember...
Jaguar- I want to go to Stone Zoo to see them.
Pallas' Cat- They're at the nearby Prospect Park Zoo, which I have yet to see.
Fishing Cat- The closest specimens might be at Smithsonian, and I might be able to get to D.C. next year.
Eurasian Lynx- Not quite sure where the nearest specimens are, they seem to be declining in US zoos.
For bears;
Sun Bears- Not sure where nearest specimens are, possibly Columbus? I do go to Florida annually and might be able to go to a zoo that has them...
Giant Pandas- The closest ones are at Smithsonian.
For Dogs;
Bush Dogs- Want to see them just like Mr.Okapi does. Thanks for info about where to see them TLD!
Dholes- Are the nearest specimens at the Wilds?
Bat-Eared/Arctic/Swift Fox- I know the nearest Swifts are at ZooAmerica in Hershey PA, Not sure where nearest Arctics or Bat-Eared's are.
And that's just for 3 of the carnivora families!:)

Thanks. There are tons of other cats and dogs on my list, but they're not/ no longer found in the US, as we seem to be getting tons of species phased out! Also Mr.Okapi, if you make a visit up north to New England, you'll be happy to know Beardsley has Maned Wolves, and Capron Park Zoo has Sloth Bears.

Buffalo zoo has Eurasian Lynx.
Cleveland zoo & Catochin wildlife & Preserve near hagerstown,Md has sun bears.
Me and my gf were at detroit zoo last feb or march and the bush dogs and pudus weren't out :(
Bat-eared foxes might be cincinnati and Arctic foxes would be Maryland zoo.
Ya Dholes would be wilds. I think the only other zoo that has them on exhibit is Minnesota.

Thank you jusko88! I'd like to visit Buffalo one day, but a 7 hour drive isn't all too appealing.:rolleyes:
I might visit Maryland in the next couple of years. I go to an annual family reunion in Maryland each year, and I might be able to go to Smithsonian next year, and possibly Maryland Zoo or National Aquarium the next year.
It's a shame San Diego doesn't exhibit their Dholes.

What does 5.3.1.5 mean? I always thought there was either X.X or X.X.X, (male.female.unknown). Or is this just a typo?

Or are there one and a half bush dogs of unknown sex at Little Rock? :D

As I understand it....
5 males
3 females
1 unknown adult
5 young in last 12 months
 
For ungulates, Tapirs of course, as I mentioned. Also, I'd like to see a bushbuck one day. Cute little buggers, but dangerous too. I guess I could also say Gaur, Forest Buffalo, Cape Buffalo, and Pudu. I would put Kudu, Dikdik, and Warthog, but those were seen on my trip to Baltimore, and Hippos were seen on my trip to Philadelphia.

For rodents, I already said Capybara, but Cane Rats and Maras are also at the top of my list.
 
Me and My man Ungulate Nerd from zoochat was just talking bout this. weird wow. um he told me Gladys Porter zoo in Brownsville,TX has them and LA zoo had them in the past.

The nearest Arctic Foxes are at Stone Zoo now.
I just found out about a place in Greenwhich which has Bat-Eared Foxes, so that's a nearby institution that I can see those animals at perhaps soon.
