Animals absent from British Zoos

i think Edinburgh used to have Ibex a few years ago and they replaced them (for whatever reason) with Addax - which are also due to move off soon

Edinburgh have not had ibex for many years, the addax replaced a herd of blackbuck in the current paddock.
Alpine ibex were kept and bred at the HWP for many years up till the late 80's

On my visit to Howletts in 1987 there seemed to be wall to wall Four-horned Antelopes, I was surprised to see so many and feel it's a shame that none are to be found at that zoo anymore or indeed in the UK.
 
thanks Kiang, my memory is going slightly, what was the other hoofstock animal they held that was classed as 'endangered' that the zoo moved out of the collection about 4 or 5 years ago?

With that timescale GA, i would say it was either lowland anoa, scimitar horned oryx or Arabian oryx.
back then the hoofstock collection was nothing to write home about, changed days now:)

yes the hoofstock collection is very good just now, im still holding out for the arrival of guar!!!

There are Dromedary Camels in private hands in the U.K.
As for Gharials watch this space will say more when i know more,as for other species of Croc most are in the U.K but mainly in private hands.

small carnivores

Camperdown Wildlife Park did have Genets, not sure whether they still do, think that Tayra are absent from British Zoos, as are Allens Olingo and Cacomistle, remember seeing Cacomistle at Dublin many years ago.

Camperdown still has Genets and Exmoor has just got Tayra!

I know a few people are looking at bring them in so if one falls through at least one of the others may still get them.As to why post this now well its going to happen sooner or later so why not let people know what could be arriving in the next few years.
 
i remember a few years back reading in a zoo magazine, a review of Heythrop zoo, and at the end of the review it said the zoo owner wanted to bring in gharial, white tailed gnu and armadillo, but that was a few years back now.
