Toronto Zoo Animals at the Toronto Zoo

The new interactive winter map is pretty neat.

In terms of the arachnids (Emperor Scorpion and Giant Baboon Spider), I don't recall seeing them in my last couple visits. Although there was an exhibit with nothing in it due to maintenance.

As for the Zebra Doves, I have indeed seen them in the Malayan Woods pavilion. Not sure about the Indomalaya Pavilion.

I saw the spider and scorpion on my last visit. I never knew what species they were though until today.

Did you see the zebra doves recently? I always look for them, but I haven't actually seen one in a while.

It was on November 5th. Haven't seen them since then, but at the same time, I wasn't really looking for them.

Thanks for sharing. It's nice to know that bird species like zebra doves and red legged honeycreepers which I haven't seen in a while are still at the zoo.

I don't look at TZ threads very often so just noticed your list last night. Thank you very much for doing all that work arcticwolf. You have reminded me of a few species I haven't checked on for a while and some to get pictures of for my collection.

Lately I have been working on improving and expanding my bird pics so noticed a few not on your list and can answer a few of the queries. Just posted pictures of some. Others that I don't have a good pic or any pic of, but have seen lately are White-cheeked Turaco, Purple Gallinule, and Pekin Robin.

Currently the Tanager cage in the Americas is being refurbished and the foliage in some aviaries has had the annual cutback so birds have been moved around or off-display.

Did you know there is a loose Zebra Dove hanging out near the Gibbons?
Did you see the albino Indian Peafowl chick in the fall?
Did you leave the show animals off because they are not actually on display? Turkey Vulture, Harris Hawk, Abyssinian Ground Hornbill etc.

Thanks again for this useful list.

Thanks for the compliment Mr Wrinkly.

I haven't seen a zebra dove at the zoo in a while so I had no idea that there was one by the gibbons.

I think I remember seeing an albino peafowl chick, but I could be wrong.

I left out the show animals because they aren't actually on display and I also don't have a complete list of species used in the shows.

Thanks to Mr Wrinkly I can now add some more species to my list:

Malayan Woods
White eye (possibly Japanese)

Indomalaya Pavilion
Red tailed laughing thrush
Black breasted thrush

Americas Pavilion
Blue dacnis
Red crested finch
Purple gallinule

African Rainforest Pavilion
White cheeked turaco

EDIT: I have just been informed by vogelcommando that the white eye in the Malayan Woods Pavilion is actually a Kikuyu white eye from Africa.

Oh the zoo must be happy with an albino peacock provided it lives to adulthood. If its a male it would be a very popular bird among the guests. It will still be popular if its a female but a big impressive white fanned out tail will be more exciting.

Triangular Spotted Pigeon is still in AR - don't have a recent picture but saw them yesterday.

Thanks for letting me know Mr Wrinkly. It's very hard for me to tell what kinds are birds are still at the zoo or not.

They are elusive; they get moved around; many have short lifespans. But this winter I am working on bird pics.
Don't ask me anything about reptiles and amphibeans!

I don't know much about them, but the latin names are usually posted on TZ signs, so can let you know, probably later this week. Meanwhile I will put up a couple of pics.
Miss your 'In Australia' posts lately.

I had a look online and apparently they are Speckled or African Rock Pigeons, Columba guinea. I hadn't heard the other name before, apparently it is only used in North America.

I'll post an update on my thread today hopefully, I've got a few written up to post, just haven't gotten around to it for awhile.

Aha - courtesy of the Bird Nerd - Columba Guinea - known in the U.S. as Triangular . . .

Cheetah's at TZ

Noticed on the names list that there are 8 cheetahs, a mix of male and female and wondered are these none breeding animals or not recommended by the AZA? Not that we need another one, 8 seems like a lot for one zoo (why do we have so many? or is that normal).

There are more than eight - many are old, non-breeding animals, or too inbred, or ill.
There are some leaving shortly, some have arrived from African Lion Safari and more are coming. TZFan and I have been working on getting a list together, but there are some questions which I am hoping to get answered tomorrow so TZFan can put it all together for everyone.

Sorry for the delay in responding to your question Zootographer but I was away for several days. I am going to post the answer to your question in Births deaths and transfers because the material I am going to cover fits better there.
