For informational purposes for anyone who wants to make a fictional work with obscure species:
I can think of many land vertebrates species that I have never found prominently represented in any works of fiction or as toys or collectible figures, but most are members of well-known groups. Thus, I can only list a few unique ones:
(For my purposes, the Burgess Animal Book and the Lesser Spotted Animals books are treated as nonfiction, although the other books in the Mother West Wind series are clearly not used in zoological contexts)
Anhinga
Bornean Bristlehead
Colugos
Cuckoo-roller
Desmans
Finfoots
Mesites
Mountain Beaver
Mousebirds
Sapayoa
Screamers
Sunbittern
Treeshrews
As far as unused species of popular animals go, that list would be endless. I’m sure you would be able to think of some yourself.
The seemingly unused animals that didn’t make the cut for the above list (although the less common ones and alternative species could definitely work):
Cassowaries (specifically the Southern variety; Ty the Tasmanian Tiger and quite a few books and toys)
Golden moles (a generic one in The Lion Guard)
Hyraxes (generic, probably Rock, in Ice Age and Khumba)
Kagu (a Yowie figure)
Pangolins (too many to name)
Red River Hog (a few toys)
Sengis (the Black-and-Rufous as a Leosco SOS plush)
Tenrecs (Lesser Hedgehog, Lesser Long-tailed, Lowland Streaked, Rice, and Web-footed in one Wild Kratts episode)
Tuataras (many NZ works and several toys)
Turacos (the Great Blue in the The Lion Guard, the Gray Go-away-Bird in The Go-away-Bird, and 2 figurines of a Fischer’s Turaco and one of the Go-away-Birds)
