Animals in Random Objects/Really tiny vivaria

Smithsonian National Zoo! Amazon building. And yes, it's a rainbow boa.
I was not expecting it to be there.
The big question, because the snake can't handle big cages or because people are not willing/able to decorate their cages appropriately? Put a gorilla in a hectare large mown grass field and it may also feel nervous due to the lack of shade, put it in a hectare large forest and it would feel fine.
That's a really good analogy and I think that the reason that the small enclosure myth for many species is exactly for this reason.

In the aquatic trade there are similar species like Betta or Parosphromenus that have small territories, and people often just say you shouldn't keep them too large. In a large open tank those species definitively don't feel at ease, they are used to patrolling small territories lined by sight-barriers. Still I know of people keeping them in large tanks without problem, but those are well-furnished.
