Researched them both at the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo Library and the Western Reserve Historical Society.

That's an extensive list. Did they actually have Bengal tigers or were they generic tigers? Why did they display Alaskan huskies? Was it ever common practice for zoos to display domestic dogs? How common are yellow baboons in captivity in the USA in general?

Its a very interesting story that the Cleveland Zoo came to exhibit 6 Alaskan Huskies in 1927.In 1925 doctors in Nome Alaska realized that a potentially deadly diphtheria epidemic was poised to sweep through Nome's population. The only serum was located in Seattle,Washington over 2,800 miles away. The engine of the only aircraft that could quickly deliver the serum was frozen and would not start.A decision was made to use multiple dog sled relay teams.A team led by a dog named Balto arrived in Nome on February,2,1925.The dogs were courageous throughout the treacherous journey. The dogs became national heroes for a hot minute but only some 10 months later were sold to the highest bidder and put in a deplorable side show Circus in Southern California. While visiting Los Angeles George Kimble a former prize fighter turned businessman was shocked to see the condition the dogs were in.Kimble then worked out a deal with the help of a local newspaper the Plain Dealer to bring the dogs to the Cleveland Zoo where they would retire to live out the remainder of their lives at the zoo.

Old Zoo archives make references to Bengal Tigers however its unclear whether they are pure Bengals.Let me try to see what I can find out about Yellow Baboons.

Thanks Team Tapir for the great info!
Do you know where in the zoo the dogs were kept? Not by the current wolf exhibit, right? Were both Balto and Togo among the dogs? Were zoo guests able to pet or interact with the dogs?
Also can anyone visit the Cleveland Zoo library or do you need to know someone? Thanks!

The dogs were housed main building which stood near the parking lot behind the current amur leopard exhibit from 1907-1979.As far as the library I do not believe its open to the public anymore but I used to work at the zoo and know quite a few people.

The Cleveland Zoo does not have Amur leopards. Maybe you mean Amur tigers?

Fire-bellied toad

Visiting the RainForest today, I noticed that the tank between the little theater and the Tropical Rainstorm across from one of the roundabouts (I think the box turtle one), which once held firebellied toads has tentacled snakes now. I wonder if they got them from Erie.

species of Cleveland Zoo past

Hartmann's Mountian Zebra

Striped Hyena

Coscoroba Swan

Magellan Goose

Orinoco Goose

Cougar

Mayalan Tapir

Black Leopard

White Rhinoceros

Pere David's Deer

( the zoo was my playground/ and learning center before all the present day traps)

also they did have an Egyptian Vulture once. Also Indian Elephant too. And American Alligators, 2 Mountian Lions, the Hyena species was the beautiful Striped Hyena (which also had pup's. Surprisely they had an incredible bird collection at one time too. The waterfowl collection was superb!!! Sadly the zoo now is nothing what zoo once was. They a just making the "zoo" a large park for people to be entertained like a Disney land theme park, and the animals are now an after thought! Way to much being done to amuse the public while picking their pockets all in the name of conservation!
