Animals No Longer At Your Zoo You'd Like To See There Again

Phoenix Zoo:

American Crocodile
Sandcat
Koala---they were only on loan from San Diego for 6 months, but I don't know why it couldn't have become a regular thing. The zoo remodeled an exhibit to be allowed to have them for that brief period.

Twycross:-
Probiscus monkeys
Douc langurs
Sumatran tigers
Kloss gibbons
Aardwolf
Cheetah
Asiatic lion (due to return at some point, eventually)
Baikal seal (my personal favourite)
Sun bear
Bush dogs

Birmingham Nature Centre:-
Grey wolf
Scottish wildcat
Barbary sheep
Polecat

Dudley:-
Killer whale & dolphins (in a better enclosure)
Western lowland gorillas
Leopard
Puma
Mandrills
Polar bears (but definitely not in the Tecton pit)

From that list, it would seem like they have NOTHING left. However, I know they have Sumatran Tiger, Lemurs, Snow Leopard and elephants. ;) (because I know you were being facetious)

I had always read good things about the LA Zoo. It just seemed like such a long list. I was very surprised. Of course, there are many animals that I could have added to the Dallas list. In the 60's and 70's Dallas had a great collection of animals, but the exhibits were from not good to bad. Happily snice the City let the zoo go private the changes and exhibits are a joy to see.

Yeah, it does seem like an impossibly long list and you really have to almost wonder what is left. I've been to the LA Zoo once, a couple of years ago, and it was pretty nice. They were still doing construction on the new Elephant habitat so I'd like to go back to see that.

I'm glad to hear the Dallas Zoo is improving after going private. It's on my list to see if I ever make it to Dallas. If only I could stop going to San Diego and save my money for a bigger trip (San Diego is cheap for me)

How I wish I could live in Southern California, or at least close, like in Arizona where you are, where trips to SDZ and Los Angeles are relatively cheap... But all the way over here in Connecticut, all I have to look forward to is my half-closed Bronx Zoo. If you hadn't heard (I'd be stunned if you hadn't), the Bronx's outdoor exhibits, which are about 55% of the entire zoo, are closed during winter months. I envy your state's climate, azcheetah2. :D

No, I didn't know the zoo was closed that much during the winter, but I suppose it makes sense. Is the Bronx Zoo the only zoo in the area that you can visit? I really do feel fortunate to live in a state with 3 zoos, 2 animal parks, 2 sanctuaries and a drive through facility plus be within a 2 hour flight of so many others in other states, but you would definitely NOT envy me during the summer. Luckily the Phoenix Zoo opens at 6am to members during the summer, but it's still really hot and you don't want to spend much time outside. All you pretty much see is sleeping animals during the summer anyway. Except the Cheetahs. They get fed early so they come running out into their yard at about 6:30am and are active for a good hour.

But even with all the nearby zoos, where do I always go? San Diego Zoo. :( I'm hoping to go to some in Northern California this summer, though. Depends on how much I want to loosen the purse strings. hahaha

Oh, no, the Bronx isn't the only zoo I can visit. There's the Queens Zoo, Prospect Park, Central Park Zoo, and the New York Aquarium. And in the state of Connecticut alone there's the Beardsley Zoo, the Maritime Aquarium and the amazing Mystic Aquarium. So, not that much of a zoo shortage. ;)

I guess I only envy your winter whether. :D
Do you wish it would snow where you live? :p

I'm glad you have more than one zoo to visit. I can't imagine living somewhere that only had one zoo or none at all. I guess I've been spoiled.

A lot of people who live outside of the Phoenix area envy our warmer weather, but wouldn't want to be here in August when it's 110 degrees and 70% humidity.

And yes. I wish I snowed MORE where I live. Arizona gets snow, just not the Phoenix area very often. Every now and then it'll snow, but the closest area with any regularity is about a 30 minute drive and they only get it about once a year. If you want to see real snow where if it snows on Wednesday you're pretty much assured it'll still be there by the weekend, you have to drive about 2 hours to Flagstaff. They actually have a ski resort there. The drive-through facility, Bearizona, is in a town about 2 1/2 hours away called Williams and they close for 2 months or so in the winter because they get unpredictable weather and where they are it becomes dangerous to drive to. They've had to close down in the middle of the day when the snow has gotten too bad.

Yes, I like snow. :D I'm from Seattle originally and live in Phoenix because my mom and brother. I'm not a desert person by any stretch of the imagination.

Oregon Zoo

Saddle billed stork
Marabou stork
Hooded vulture (on exhibit, they have one in the bird show)
Saw whet owl (The one on exhibit moved to the bird show)
Inca terns (off exhibit due to penguin pool filtration system...which is taking way too long but that's due to finding a problem with an existing set up)
Lorikeets (They close the exhibit for the winter...which is a semi-new thing, but they'll be back)
Meerkats
Grizzly bears
Musk ox
Snowy owl
Short or long eared owl (one of the two were in the Alaska tundra exhibit)

I'll see when I have a few days available to do a San Diego Zoo list... Its gonna be a long one.

Here are some species formerly exhibited at Beardsley that I want to come back:
Warthogs
Macaws
Galapagos Giant Tortoises
Green Iguana
Capybaras
There's not much else I can think of
At Mystic Aquarium, it'd be great if the bottlenose dolphins came back, which I believe is in their master plan. I'd also like to see Northern Fur Seals again.

Oh yeah, I''d like to see Broad-Snouted Caimans, Virginia Opossums, Reindeer, and Cougars come back to Beardsley. There are so many other animals used to be exhibited, but I think that was before the zoo earned AZA accreditation, and before I was born.

I'll be interested in seeing that list. I went with my family in 1987 then didn't go again until 2008 or 2009, I think. Not that I'd remember what they had back in 1987 other than Lions (the male rolled onto his back and started to roar...pretty memorable)

American crocodile? I don't recall those ever being in the collection. American alligators for sure, but not crocodiles.

-Lammergeier
-Speke's Sitatunga
and

Also, I thought dwarf mongooses were on exhibit in the kopje section?

A couple of questions based on this list:
1) What is in the saw-whet owl aviary now?
2) Is elk meadow just empty?
