Animals you miss from your hometown zoo

The Aardvark House was closed around 2016, I believe? It is now a blank spot on the map and was ambiguously referred to by its historic name as Small Antelope House recently.

Gotcha. I didn't realize Brookfield no longer has aardvarks...

Edinburgh has many, many animals I wish they had back. Here is just some:

Honey badger
Asiatic golden cat
Aardwolf
Japanese serow
Margay
Malayan civet
Malayan tapir
Moholi bushbaby
Patagonian sea lion
Amur leopard
Jaguar
Hamlyn’s monkey
Mongoose lemur
Scatler’s lemur
Purple faced langur

I would have put giraffes on here but they arrived after a 15 year absence in 2021. Most of these animals left from 2010-2020.

What I miss most from Marwell.

  • Babirusa - An interesting and unusual species.
  • Malayan tapir - They were replaced with Brazilians. Malayan tapir are rare in the UK, only 3 zoos currently hold them whilst the Brazilian species are common.
  • Takin as mentioned above.
  • Arabian sand cats - Not a well known species but I always noticed a positive reaction from visitors due to the cuteness factor.
  • Not a specific species but the reduction in the cat collection. The cat species currently held are Amur tigers, snow leopards and servals. This is a zoo that at one point held lions, tigers, leopards, jaguars, snow leopards, cheetahs and several smaller species of cat a the same time.
In a way, although Edinburgh’s enclosure for the tapirs was pretty standard and old, it’s a shame to see them go.

I miss some animals from five sisters zoo also:

Bat-eared fox
Some of the animals viewed in the upper area of the castle zoo.
