Animals you'll never see in a zoo #2

Phoenix Zoo had a Chinese pangolin in the early 90's. I'll look and see if I have a photo.

If I read Liepzig's 'Gondwana' plans correctly the entrance and exit exhibits are entitled 'Living Fossils'. This looks interesting and I think it's an appropriate theme to set the stage for the main display.
I immediately thought of horseshoe crabs and tuataras, but there must be others. Any suggestions as to what they might be? Or perhaps I ought to keep on topic for this thread by asking which of the animals that you'll never see in a zoo would you call living fossils?

Alan

Could be lungfish.

I'd bet there aren't any zoos with Bornean earless montors. They aren't true monitor lizards and are extremely rare anywhere, much less captivity. They kept one off display in Cincy back around 1995, and it died shortly thereafter. I can't remember the taxonomic name, maybe lanthanotidae? Something similar, anyway. You can't even find pictures of it on the internet.

Earless monitor

A very odd looking reptile. Once thought to be in the Gila monster family rather than a true monitor - in appearance certainly lies between the two.

Wow. I'd looked all over for pictures of them. I think the only place I'd seen one was at the Field Museum in Chicago. It was taxidermed, of course. Very cool finds.

Whipsnade had a forest elephant which died in 1988. I made my first visit in 1989 so I only just missed seeing him.

Does anyone know of any Otter-civet in captivity?

I know San Diego used to keep them in the '70 and London Zoo in the 50's

any currently kept, range-country zoos?

Forest Elephant.

Whipsnade's bull was called 'Jumbo'.

A few years ago I watched a TV programme about some people setting up an Indian restaurant somewhere in Southern France. As a publicity stunt for the opening day they borrowed an Elephant from a small French circus. This animal was most definately an African Forest elephant (though obviously this wasn't mentioned) and possibly it may still be with the same French circus...
