Animals You've Seen That Few Zoochatters Have Seen

I issue a challenge to see if anyone has seen over 100 of these (I can think of a few who may have a good shot!)

I've seen about 125 of those (kept losing count). BUT I've counted Chaetophractus nationi (now widely considered to be an invalid species) and the alleged 'golden civets' which *are* mislabelled but I've seen the same animals which you have.

I've seen 10 on Giant Elands mega list.

Thought of some others -Palmer's Chipmunk (wild)
ash meadows armargosa pupfish (wild)
Horned Guan -St Louis
Red Wolf - Endangered Wolf Center

I skimmed through quick and I think I have 9.

Give me some time and I'll catch up some, hopefully get a few to make you jealous in between ;)

~Thylo

I live for this kind of jealousy haha! Just adds to my motivation!

Where to next? I'm not missing too many currently captive species I'm aware of ;). Here's a smattering of what keeps me awake at night lol:

Outside of Beijing, China is an untouched region for me (Tibetan & Przewalski's gazelle, Spotted Linsang, Mainland Serow, Chinese Desert Cat).

I need to revisit India to see Pygmy Hogs as well as the Red Serow and assorted primates at the Assam State Zoo, maybe an Indus River Dolphin sighting if lucky. I'm also haunted by both the Nilgiri Tahr (never got a proper photo from San Diego) and Nilgiri Langur (couldn't find it at Erfurt when I arrived 1 hour before closing in 2010- was probably in area that had closed for the day). Seeing those in the wild would be nice and I think possible in the same day (kills me that the Nilgiri Tahr in Texas are so impossible to gain access to)

Indonesia left a bunch of behind the scenes animals off the table for me (i.e. Javan Warty Pigs, Sunda Clouded Leopard, some Tarsier species, the now deceased Bay Cat) and the out of the way Black spotted cuscus (if it's still there). A successful trek to see Javan Rhinos of course would just end any competition haha! New Guinea would probably yield a couple new Tree Kangaroos (one of my all time favorite species to add).

Tamaraw might've been possible with more days spent in Philippines (I also missed their Tarsier, Pangolin and Colugo- the later two I'm not sure are actually held anywhere).

In Japan I missed out on Bearded & Ringed Seals, African Forest Elephant, Pygmy Killer Whale, and Amami Rabbit but each one would probably require it's own day.

For Australia the Greater glider, Barton's Long Beaked Echidna, Leadbeater's possum, long-nosed bandicoot and Mala all hurt to miss out on.

Africa is wide open so South Africa might get Common Reedbuck, and both Grysbok. Gabon has that African golden cat, African Forest Elephants as well as some primates and maybe duikers or water chevrotain. Ethiopia and Madgascar are my 2 most hopeful destinations chock full of wild endemics like Mountain Nyala, Ethiopian Wolf, Walia Ibex, Big-headed African mole-rat (not to mention Bohor Reedbuck), Indri, and a much needed infusion of ANY sportative lemurs or additional mouse lemurs and Sifakas (painfully missed the Diademed at Duke).

New for me primates and Opossums are always bound to pop up in South America as well as the Mountain Coati and Tucuxi both currently in Colombian locations. Hispaniolan solenodon in DR is at the top of my list especially because it's so close to Florida which I visit a decent amount. (DR and/or Colombia may be my next international trip if I can pull it off).

Europe and North America are basically down to a few bats, hedgehogs, rabbits and rodents I haven't seen (plus some unique subspecies for sure). Some notable exceptions are the Bearded Seals at Brest, and possibly Side-striped Jackals in Missouri.

A super successful trip to Antarctica might yield 4 species of Seal I've never seen, and some cetaceans (How many Zoochatters have been to Antarctica!?) A beaked whale anywhere in the world is still high atop my wishlist as well.

For now you've got those damn Montane Guinea Pigs that I didn't even know I missed at the Domestic area of Schönebeck (feral European Rabbits in that same area as well, double gut-punch!)

So I spent some time and went through my Mammal lifelist and came up with the following 252 species that few zoochatters have likely seen. I appologize for the formatting ahead of time. Most of these I've only seen once before and usually somewhere outside North America or Europe (where most zoochatters call home.) If you'd like me to specify where I saw any of these just let me know!

I'm guessing there's a chance I'm the only zoochatter to have seen Zeledon's mouse opossum, Honduran white Bat, Palawan stink badger, Peale's dolphin, Merida Brocket Deer

I have 2.

I've seen about 125 of those (kept losing count). BUT I've counted Chaetophractus nationi (now widely considered to be an invalid species) and the alleged 'golden civets' which *are* mislabelled but I've seen the same animals which you have.

Ah yes the mighty @devilfish. I figured you would have one of the best chances at the challenge. Well done chap!! Can I convince you to make your own sort of mega-list??

I need to revisit India to see Pygmy Hogs as well as the Red Serow and assorted primates at the Assam State Zoo, maybe an Indus River Dolphin sighting if lucky. I've seen the Pigmy Hog, Red Serow, and River Dolphin. Also Golden Langur.

I saw Nilgiri Langurs in the trees along the road while waiting for the Nilgiri Tahr reserve to open for the day - but they are really difficult monkeys to photograph in the wild because they are heavily-poached and hence very skittish.

I issue a challenge to see if anyone has seen over 100 of these (I can think of a few who may have a good shot!)

A quick count brought me to 18 ( :( ) species from your list ( was so lucky to visit Antwerp, Rotterdam, Wassenaar and Amsterdam regulary in the mid-1970s - mid-1980s which all had large collections at that time with a good number of rarely seen species ).
I guess with birds I had done a lot better ;).

I think I take first place for the least amount seen: one!

Pygmy Hog at the breeding center?

Ahh you've got quite the lead on me in Nilgiri mammals. Seen a Nilgiri Marten??

Pigmy Hog at the breeding centre at Nameri (photos in India - Other I think). Serow was at the Assam State Zoo. Ganges Dolphin and Golden Langur were wild (the Golden Langurs at the zoo were either hiding, off-display, or not there)

I haven't seen the Nilgiri Marten, no - was somewhat foiled by the attitudes of the guards at the park at which I was going to look for them.

I've gone through your list and taken out all the species I've seen. I only keep track of wild animals though, so my list might be a bit off. I've just copied your lay-out and added my comment after the animal, so the formatting etc is just as you had it. I've put an asterisk next to some species for which I'm not sure or for which I've seen a close replacement species.

I make it 67 plus six with asterisks.

I doubt you've seen Amazonian Manatee.

The ones in Singapore are regular West Indian Manatees if those are the ones you've seen.

Ahh, you would be correct. My mistake. I simply assumed because they were in an Amazonian exhibit that they were in fact Amazonian manatees.
