Animals You've Seen That Few Zoochatters Have Seen

I saw Tibetan / Mongolian Wolves at Zurich the day before they left to Tierpark Biel, making me quite possibly the last ZooChat member to have ever seen them at Zurich. The fact that I saw them half an hour before the zoo’s closure after they evaded me earlier in the day only made the experience even more satisfactory.

This means that Biel in Switzerland and two obscure specialist ‘wolf parks’ in Germany and France are the only places in Europe where this species can be seen, and as all of those collections aren’t exactly places that I am likely to visit in the forseeable future, I am tremendously grateful to have seen them while I had the chance!
That's very lucky. I'd say they might completely gone in a couple of years or so from Europe since there doesn't seem to be much much drive in exhibiting them. There is also only a small number of zoos in their native range as well!

I’ve seen the only Borneo Earless Monitor in captivity, though I imagine a couple Zoochatters have seen them as well.

I’m so sorry I just realized that I wrote salamander. I meant to say monitor.
Ah. Well where-ever you saw them they weren't they only ones in captivity. Quite a lot of them have been smuggled out of Borneo. They are kept in several zoos around the world, and are in private hands as well, and have even been bred in European zoos I think.

Edit: checking Zootierliste, they list 17 current holders in European zoos.

The zoo, a reptile and amphibian private institution Izoo, claims that they were the only ones in captivity. You are probably correct though.

A couple more from the wild I recently added:

Japanese Paradise Flycatcher ~ Hachioji Temple Ruins

Asian Stubtail ~ Karuizawa Wild Bird Forest

Japanese Accentor ~ Karuizawa Town

I didn't know they are rare but I've also seen chousinghas, mugger crocodiles, and Tibetan wolves.
I saw gharial, Assamese macaques, adjutants (unsure of the exact species), rollaway monkeys, Venezuelan howlers, desert crocodile, grey cheeked mangabey and wild water buffalo but wasn't sure of their rarity.

The rarest animals that I have seen in captivity are:
  1. European Kingfisher - Surprisingly rare for such a common bird in Europe.
  2. Orinoco Dolphin
  3. Civets at the Singapore Night Safari - It was too dark to see clearly what was jumping on me.
  4. Whale Shark - Not particularly rare.
  5. Harbour Porpoise
  6. Pacific White-sided Dolphin
  7. Walrus - Not that rare.
Rarest animals I have seen in the wild:
  1. Irrawaddy Dolphin
  2. Proboscis Monkey
  3. Sunda Flying Lemur
I've probably seen a lot more rare animals in both captivity and the wild, but these are the most memorable.

Probably only the Irrawaddy Dolphin would qualify as a species "that few Zoochatters have seen". All the others would have been seen by many Zoochatters.

Rarest species I've seen

Ruppel's Sand Fox- LA zoo

Northern Carmine Bee-Eater- San Diego zoo

"Saipan" White-eye- National Aviary

Tonkean Macaque- Luray zoo
