Edinburgh Zoo Another day, another primate escape

To be fair, barbary macaques don't pose as much of a threat to the public and staff as a troop of chimps;)

Fair enough, but these primates actually escaped into an area where they could come into contact with the public

Yes but at Monkey Forest you can walk through a troop of Barbary Macaques numbering around 200 so i think the danger they pose to humans is alot less than a Chimp.also there are alot of walk through Barbary Macaques exhibits in Europe i`ve beem through at least 3 on my travels and i know there are many more that i haven`t .

Weren't they planning a barbary macaque walkthrough anyway? ;)
Seriously, I wouldnt close the zoo if barbary macaques escaped it is a totally different thing concerning chimpanzees.

There's are several 'Monkey Forests' with big numbers of Barbary Apes like Trentham, in Europe (run by the same company?). Also Apenheul has a walk-through area with them too- then there's Gibralter of course...

Maybe Edinburgh will also turn them into a 'contact exhibit' after this? :)

there may be walk through enclousers at other zoos but these will be set up to certain guide lines. most zoos have a strict animal escape procedure in which any animal that falls in to catagory 1 of the dangerous animal list according to the zoo license, (which i ashume Barbary macaque's are) should be evactuated untill the recapture of said animals. So i am surprised that the zoo was not closed.

I don't know about the legislation governing the evacuation of a zoo, but Barbary macaques are indeed listed under the Dangerous Wild Animals act, as are all the Cercopithecidae.

was at the zoo on Wednesday afternoon and there were still 3 macaques 'on the loose' within the park, clearly enjoying themselves in the trees at the side of Whitson wood!!

as they pose no danger to the visitors, the keepers are continuing to coax them down with food rather than racing to dart them...

3 still loose on Saturday. While I was there they were seen around their new enclosure, up next to the Hog Deers, and beside the lion enclosure.

Photos in gallery. :)

Primates

Do believe there is only 2 barbary's roaming the park was at the zoo today and in the monkey house there was three in the enclosure after the Diana Monkeys have to say saw the troop of new baboons very impressive animals think in total there is 32 in the group the largest number of any primate species i have see in the collection over the 5 years I have been a member of the zoo.

Also noticed on Saturday that the electric fencing has been upgraded. I actually managed to inadvertently get a clip of one of them trying to get out the previous Saturday which showed how it really was a tiny part of the fence that they culd get out.

Apparently the worse thing that these animals will do is steal someone's picnic! More sales for Stripes and Oasis then eh?

Barbarys

Hi Kiang

Just to let you know as when at the zoo last sunday was told the keepers managed to lure the barbarys into the Gelada house and i think they are still in there usure of this but will check with a keeper tomorrow of their where abouts

Thought you'd like to see the video clip which shows where theywere getting out. No fault of the keepers I'd say, more well done to the macaques.

Apparently the last one was bribed in after being seen sitting on a railing at the gelada baboon house with a piece of tree bark watching another macaque inside with a banana in one hand, strawberry in another and a big pile of monkey nuts in front! That's according to one of the keepers at Members evening last week

Just to let Kiang and the rest know that was at the zoo today sunday 26th july and was talking to primate keeper the 5 barbarys are being kept in the monkey house in the enclosure where the aye aye used to be. Love the Ginuea Baboons was watching them for ages good troop to bring into the zoo and i am hearing they keepers have them well trained :)

i read today in one of the papers that the zoo had to call in the fire brigade, due to one of the young Guinea baboon, trapping themselves by the head on one of the climbing frames, but luckily mum and a male baboon managed to free the youngster.

OOh i never heard that was speaking to one of the primate keepers for a while today glad the wee thing was ok really are great to watch you somestimes forget you have the rest of the zoo to visit

Are the Guinea baboons a permanent addition to the Zoo or is it only a temporary holding while the Paris Vincennes Zoo- where they came from- is closed and being rebuilt.
