The Point Defiance Zoo and Aquarium had its second busiest year in its history, with over 550,000 visitors in 2008. Perhaps this fairly small zoo benefited from the poor economy and Americans only visiting local attractions rather than heading off overseas.

The Northwest Trek Wildlife Park, which in my opinion is one of the best small zoos in North America, also had a fantastic year in 2008. There were almost 200,000 visitors to this massive park, which focuses exclusively on North American animals.
 
One year later, the same result as over 620,000 visited this relatively small Tacoma Zoo. Nearby "sister park" Northwest Trek had 190,000 visitors in 2009:
