Yorkshire Wildlife Park Another new species!

Blimey - it's all go. Another building project for 2011 to add to the tigers and South American walkthrough.

The expansion continues...

Thanks for the links - looks a good design (and a sensible location). I know the owners want to avoid roofed cages and the plans do seem to suggest this will be an open-topped exhibit - they only talk about fencing, not roof, and viewing is from what looks like quite a high embankment - I think that would be only the second open-topped leopard exhibit in the UK (after Banham)?

This is great news for the park and for Doncaster . So cant wait to see these but what about the other tigers, any news of them or the giraffe . Also the links with theplans dont worl :-( any reason .

Brilliant news, any idea when the other pair of Amur Tigers are due to arrive? And are they breeding their Lions again?

wow - certainly going to have to arrange a visit here very soon! 3 Amur Leopards - how darned cute are they :O)

Give 'em a chance - they haven't finished building the second tiger enclosure yet, and still only have one of the first pair! I'd have thought it's unlikely the second pair will arrive until the first two are well-settled.

I've not heard of any particular effort to breed the lions.

I've not heard of any particular effort to breed the lions.

This is all stuff I've been told whilst chatting to people or picked up from papers etc so I don't know if it's 'official'.

They have been advised not to breed the lions (someone said this recently and it's what I've always understood), the male with 4 females was vasectomised soon after they arrrived and the 2 females who live with 3 males each have implants (I think).

I was told by a member of staff, but the person who told me was a bit vague about it, that one was pregnant on arrival (presumably they/it died) and got pregnant again almost immediately but the cub died (this birth was reported in the local paper).

Part of their problems were believed to arise from them being inbred eg Dani's spinal problem. I'm not sure how certain they are about their history.

I visited the park on Boxing day and saw the Eland in the African Plains exhibit.
The Guanaco have been moved into an area at the rear of the lions and can be viewed from the carpark. A sign on their origional enclosure stated that they have been moved so work can begin on the "South American Village" ready for Easter (Any idea's what this may be? I haven't seen it mentioned on any of the plans), though there was no indication as to whether the Guanaco would be returning to that general area or not.
The leopard enclosure and elevated viewing area seems to be coming along nicely and the Ranger we spoke with was very excited about the leopards going on show at Easter. She also mentioned Giraffes, as if they would be the next big draw, though she revealed no time scales.
