Yorkshire Wildlife Park Another new species!

any ideas if they do get giraffes this year where they will be from?

It has been said on a thread(s) that they will be getting giraffes but I don't know were they will come from. The most probable option would be a hybrid herd (All male/female), this does seem to be the case if, of course they do house giraffes. [It'd be interesting if they held a pure-group]

I think this year's major/biggest project will be the leopards and getting them on-show for what we've been told Easter time. Despite YWP only opening a few years ago it's one of the best small collections I've heard of and I do plan to visit this year probably around the time the leopards are to be on-show.

I've attached the link about the giraffes here:

No idea where from but last I heard it was likely bachelors but not entirely given up hope on a breeding herd but things really seem to be completely fluid as far as animal acquisitions go.

I think the leopards are probably well on the way to being sorted so I'm not sure they are the years big project but they'll certainly be the start of the years big publicity at Easter!

Visited on New Years Day hol and it was all hands on deck with more than 3 times the expected visitor numbers. Good job it wasn't yesterday's weather or there wouldn't have been 3 visitors!

That is primarily up to the Species Coordinator and what he thinks of the basic exhibit they would want to put in.

Realistically, YWP can only expect a bachelor (cum hybrid) giraffe herd of either all male or all female composition.

But realistically, this time last year, one probably wouldn't have expected them to have 2 Amur tigers and 3 Amur leopards within 5 months!

They know what's realistic but it doesn't stop you trying!

Read: in Amur leopard realistically means that it is unrealistic to expect female leopard to arrive anytime soon. Which is as much as I said for pure-bred giraffe ... given that a zoo has no proven experience with them they may well be allocated hybrids ... either male-male or female-female.

Other than that, I wish the YWP every good fortunes. Certainly, is a nice sight to have a wildlife park in deepest and me beloved Yorkshire. :)

Actually all the senior staff have a very proven record with pure breed Giraffes,as between them they have about 30-40 years experience at Woburn with their Rothschild Giraffe herd,as a result I for one would not be surprised if they got a pure herd to start with.

I second that zoogiraffe. I hope they will and good on them!
Just remains unlikely the SC will be swayed right away.

First sneak peek at one of the parks newest stars. Not the greatest shot but the second pic shows where you have to stand to see anything.

They're not always in this smaller part of the enclosure, but can be seen quite clearly if you're lucky enough to visit on a day when any of them are.

Closer / cropped image. The size of this guy's tail was the main talking point from everyone who saw him sat there!

Anyone know what all the building work and foundations are for between the camels and South American exhibits?

I think it's something to do with a south American village or something like that. Giraffes are supposed to be on the opposite side of the leopards to the camels

There building a cafe/food area near the south american viva, as the current cafe is going to struggle to cope with the predicted number of guests this summer.

That would make sense as visitors were queing out of the door of the cafe yesterday lunch.

Any one know where the guanaco have gone? They moved from the site of this "South American Village" and had been behind the lions, viewable from the carpark, but didn't see them at all yesterday.
