Colchester Zoo's Facebook page has just revealed that Anouska the hybrid Amur tigeress will be leaving the zoo shortly to make way for a new pure Amur female as a mate for Igor. No details yet on where or when she will go.

New female could possibly be from the 2009 litter of 1:2 at HWP?

That could be a possibilty, Or maybe one of the two young Port Lympne Tigresses which are at/going to Knowsley? - They are just entering pairing age.
However, im more concerned on where Anoushka is going. If she was to go back to Linton as she is sterilised, And Mirko Castrated and to give Katinks some more company, In theory it would be a great move. But if for some reason Anoushka didnt take a liking to one of them it would be back to the drawing board.
But if it was to go well it would be a good non breeding group at Linton to make some space else where.
Lintons Enclosure could quite easily house 3 non breeding tigers and that would free up space, and keep the 'hybrids' all together in one place within the UK. Except Makari who is at the Wildlife Heritage Foundation. And if WHF has space there could be a good chance of her going there.

The Port Lyme sisters moved to Knowsley in November 09. The pair at HWP are well represented already (this is their 3rd litter) so there's a good chance that they are related to Igor already.

Maybe one of the Port Lympne sisters could be a possibilty, If there is a male allready lined up for Knowlsey it wouldnt suprise me. But if there isnt I can see them staying as a pair.

I think Knowsley are waiting until their elderly hybrid male Khan dies before they consider bringing in a new Amur male.

Aww that a shame but I can see why !!! We have watched her grown up from a cub at Linton and her sister before her.

My partner has got a tiger experience booked in May he will be so disappointed it wont be with her.

She may still be there in May because no female has been sourced yet and Colchester tend to move and bring animals in on the same day.

I wonder how the separation will affect both Anouska and Igor as they seem to get on really well together.

I think its a shame that Annoska is leaving they were possibly the most romantic animals at Colchester! Hope whoever comes next will get on with Igor. We might even get some amur tiger cubs!

I hope so stripes and I agree Bug & Goretex we were watching them both on Wednesday for ages and Annouska cannot take her eyes off Igor lol and he kept going back to her all the time and greeting sooo sweet!

Its a shame when Anastasia died at Colchester (for those that don't know she was Annouska sister that had a fit and died in the pool) that the autopsy did not find out that she was not a pure Amur as I feel this situation would not have been created!

Maybe she will join her brother at WHF I have never visited but i feel Linton certainly do not have the room for another non breeding tiger. hopefully it will be somewhere we can visit!!!

She could be put in with her younger sister and father at Linton. They are permanently together now. Her Mother Deja was recently put to sleep due to severe health problems so Anoushka could take her mothers place should the need arise.

Longleat's 0:3 have some relation to the Linton line (hence they are hybrids as well) I wonder if she could go and join them?

Would IOW Zoo or Flamingo Land have space?

Aww sad news about Deja, she was such a brilliant mother (shame about the problems).

Longleat would be brilliant I still wonder if Linton is big enough for 3!!

Yes, this is sad news about her having to leave. However, I had been expecting it ever since we found out she was infact hybrid on Zoo Days.
PS KarenZoo- did you see me at all on wednesday doing my keeper for a day?

Has it been known all along the Longleat trio were hybrids? I seem to recall them being touted as Siberians on "Animal Park".

Do they have any purebreed animals or are they all mongrels?

Not doing much for conservation!

Longleat's three were thought to be pure Amur along with tigers at Colchester, WHF and Linton Zoo. In late 2007 it was unfortunatly discovered that around 30 Amur tigers in Europe had Sumatran genes and were therefore not pure. By the time this was discovered Anouska was pregnant with her first litter although she ate them not long after they were born. She has since been sterilised.

I wonder if Colchester will start seperating them now they know she is off.

No Roz didn't spot you, I was looking lol were you doing it solo or was there several of you? (be nice if you put an account of your day on the Winter thread hint hint :) although soon need a spring one!!)

I think it's a shame that they're sending Anouska away :( She and Igor appeared to get along very well and certainly seemed to be pine for each other when seperated - animals they might be, but they have feelings too.

Also, I thought Amurs, although endangered like all species of tiger, were at safe numbers in the captive population? If so, seems like even less of a reason, again IMHO to split a perfectly happy, albeit non-breeding, couple. After all, haven't we already got several established breeding pairs of Amur tigers in the UK?

No, they are neither safe nor sound in wild or captivity.
The captive population is certainly genetically more robust.
A possible source for future reintroduction (as is planned with Amur leopards).
