I was just thinking how about over the past few years how much the giant anteater population in the uk has expanded from being London the only holders too howletts, colchester, marwell and edinburgh all having thier own!

Howletts - 1.1 (what about the youngster) - from Private Collection Near Sandwich

Colchester - 1.1?

Marwell - Male from vienna zoo, female came from Madgeburg Germany.

Edinburgh -

London - 1.1?

Amazon World - 1.1

Marwell's male Ernesto was born on the 5th of july 2004 at vienna zoo and came to marwell in 2005/2006. Marwells female Arica came fromMadgeburg Germany in 2007 hope that helps abit

any more history you guys can dig up? im particullary interested in the howletts and edinburgh ones

i more interested in the history where they came from and the sex

Amazon World , Isle of Wight , also have a pair . I believe the pair at Howletts - which bred last year - belong to the owner of the Rare Species collection near Sandwich and there has been a dispute over his wanting them back from breeding loan .

oh yeah how could i forgot them isaw them last year! thanks

more info please guys...

Isis are now showing 0.1 giant anteater at Hamerton, where did she come from?
Howletts are also not showing giant anteaters any more, is this true

Remember people ISIS maybe's aye, maybe's no!!

There are now anteaters at Belfast, I'll let Al fill you in on the details as its not on my section so not sure whats what

Edinburgh's male anteater was indeed the one that moved to Belfast, leaving Scotland currently anteater-less. However, a pair is apparentley planned to arrive after the maned wolves, who share the exhibit, have had their cubs.

Edinburgh has no anteaters at present.
RSCC has a pair.
Howletts has none
Hamerton's came from Zurich
Belfast's came from Edinburgh.

Where were they housed at RSCC? I never saw them, or the Tamandua I've heard they have.

I presume this means the owner of RSCC was able to persuade Howletts to hand back his anteaters then.

Colchester have three anteaters at the moment.

Colchester got its male, Gilberto (named after the former Arsenal player) from London Zoo in mid 2005 and became only the second zoo in the UK to house the animal. (Press Information: Giant Anteater arrives at Colchester Zoo)

In Feburary 2007 the zoo got its female, Furai from Zurich Zoo. I remember visiting the zoo at the time and the two were kept in separate holding areas. Gilberto was sticking his nose in the gap in the door trying to introduce himself, lol.

They were mixed together in the May and obviosly hit it off striaght away as Furai gave birth on 2nd December 2007 to a male named Silver.(BBC - Essex - Features - New anteater arrival)

When I visited the zoo last month Gilberto and Furai were back together in one holding area and Silver was by himself in another, so I would imagine that he will be moved to another zoo in the near future.
