Anti Zoo and Aquarium lobbying.

Today I received the email reproduced below. We need to be a lot more vocal in what want the government to do for zoos at this time. Any suggestions?

Hello Supporter,

I have a really crucial action for you to take today, which could impact on the lives of thousands of animals.

Last Summer the government announced a 'Zoo Animals Fund' which was designed to offer funding to zoos who were struggling to provide the basics for animals due to Covid-19, and to support rehoming costs in the event that zoos need to downsize or potentially close.

But now the industry is demanding that this funding be extended, to fuel the entire industry and to keep it going into the future.

This is no longer about looking out for the animals, but instead about keeping this cruel industry alive.

The British and Irish Association of Zoos and Aquariums (BIAZA) has written to Boris Johnson calling for the replacement of the government's existing Zoo Animals Fund with a 'Zoo Recovery Fund'.

To counter this I have have written to Boris Johnson, urging him to reject BIAZA's calls for any further funding to be made available to zoos and aquariums. Now is the time to be phasing out keeping animals in captivity, not ensuring it continues!

But to really make the case, I need your help!

Will you sign on to our letter to Boris Johnson and demand that zoos are NOT given any more funding?

It will just take 1 minute to add your name!
TAKE ACTION
Please take this really crucial action today, to make sure this outdated industry doesn't benefit from lockdown, and access more public funds.

The zoo and aquarium industry does not need saving – the animals caught up within it do.

Until all are free,

P.S. Please sign on to our letter to Boris Johnson and demand that zoos are NOT given anymore funding!

Honestly the best thing you can do is write to your MP, the PM and the appropriate Minister in support of the zoos. I mean write a personal letter with a stamp. They regard that type of letter as indicative of far more votes than a form letter, email or online petition. The letter should not be long. Just say you support zoos and the important work they do, are aware of the welfare steps they take and ask that the funding be given. A 100 such letters would probably swing the issue.

Absolutely spot on.
Generic 'form' letters are 'amalgamated' in the eyes of MP's
Each subsequent one received is assumed to be the same as the first, so however many there are, they only count as one.
Personal letters are a MUST, not only signed, but individually written and not copied text. As MRJ says, keep it short too.
All our MPs will already have quite a few on file from last May/June...!

Sound advice. We have just written one as a family. My daughter took great pleasure in riding down to the post box. She misses going to Paignton and Wild Place so much and worries about ‘her’ animals.

Be careful Batto, that is fighting talk.

You may end up with hordes of animal rights activists dressed in animal costumes performing interpretative dances outside of Welt der Gifte in protest.
That would give me the opportunity to post another popular gif:

Funny enough, there's actually an ardent animal rights activist living not too far away from the WdG venue. He's either not heard of WdG yet or WdG might not fit his choice of targets, which are stray pets in Slovakia / Romania, local farmers, hunters and slaughterhouses as well as donkeys in Mauritania.

Why do they want freedom for animals? Are they trying to compensate for something personal?

How do they know what is best for the animals? How do they know better than keepers, which probably spent years trying to understand the animals they work wit? Did they get Solomon's ring? Where can I also find a Solomon's ring? I've always wanted to talk with animals since childhood.

I looked on the site and apparently this organization was formerly known as "CAPS" and they have a long history of opposing zoos.

From reading their mission statement and other info on their site it basically seems that this organization has adopted an extremely myopic and reductive sweeping generalization of zoos being "cruel" and opposes the existence of them all (barring of course sanctuaries ).

Again like the overwhelming majority of anti-zoo animal rights activists they neither appear to be able to formulate a structured argument against the need for zoos as centers of ex-situ conservation nor able to grasp the complexity and nuance of the situation.

Ideologically speaking these are "true believers" and I might be wrong but I don't think any constructive dialogue would really be possible.

It seems that in their worldview there are no shades of grey and there is no nuance because there are no decent zoos and they are all bastions of cruelty, there has been only minimal progress in the management of zoos since the Victorian era and they must therefore all be torn down and the animals "liberated".

Yep, for some reason animal rights activists tend to have a bias towards mammals so I'm sure reptiles and amphibians are not on his radar.

Also be careful of the lion man as he is out there too and has a similar stance.

If somebody has too much time in their hands, one could start pro-zoo and aquarium lobbying.

Start with earlier opening date of the local zoo, then with more finances to the local zoo, or lobbying for funding etc. And be sure to remind your PM or whomever, that over 90% of people in polls support zoos and their conservation work.

Talking about ju-jitsu: if an insignificant anti-zoo group can make lots of noise and appear to be a serious movement, a couple of pro-zoo enthusiasts could do the same in the opposite way.

I think there already are pro-zoo and aquarium lobbies out there, zoos and zoo enthusiasts may feel a bit embattled but it hasn't quite reached the point of no return yet.

What I propose is an epic dance off / break dancing contest between pro zoo enthusiasts and anti zoo activists dressed in animal costumes.

What do these idiots propose the zoo's do with their animals? Put them down or repatriate them to the places where they weren't safe in the first place?

I'm sure the rhino and elephant poachers would be grateful for a few hundred new victims with no survival skills to be imported! Ripe for the plucking!

And I'm sure the Kalahari can support an influx of thousands of captive bred meerkats....

These CAPS people together with PETA are just stupid beyond words.
