ZOO Antwerpen Antwerp zoo

That sounds a little messed up. Wouldn't zoos try and avoid this sort of thing happening?

PS. Does anyone have a map of Antwerp Zoo. I like to look at the maps from zoos and can't find a map of Antwerp Zoo anywhere.

Hi,

Im in Belgium for 14 days and got time to visit Antwerpen Zoo at last 07/07.

Ok I can understand that is a city Zoo, with a long history, some buildings are listed, etc. But really I was shocked to see such small space for some animals, the Elephants is totally stupid that in this times a Zoo have elephants in such conditions. I couldn´t stay there for more than 2 minutes looking the elephants, I feel me so sorry for them.

Well I have some pictures and will upload as soon Im back to Brasil. If some body have questions can ask me.

Thanks.

it's the ninth birth, but this one would be the first to survive and grow up....

Father is Afer (1991, Arnhem)
Mother is Curly (??,???)

and this aardvark baby also didn't make it. So Antwerp is still waiting for the first succesfull aardvarkbreeding.....

The good news is that the aardvark that was recently born in Arnhem is doing very well. I think is is aardvark birth nr. 30 in the last 20 years, most of the births their were succesfull.

Lifted from a statement released by the zoo.

Fourteen eggs of lizards of Komodo have been "deposited" at Antwerp Zoo by a female lizard. If the eggs are fertilized and they give birth to baby monitors, it will be an exceptional event for the zoo, the zoo said in a statement Monday.
The eggs are the result of a coupling between lizards of Komodo, Keli and Jaka. They were placed in special incubators but only in 5-7 months that the outbreak will occur. The Komodo dragons are carnivores with a preference for rotting meat. At the zoo, they get whole chickens, mice, fish and beef, 2 to 3 pounds per week. The breeding program is very important because the species is vulnerable, says the statement from the zoo. Only sixty Komodo dragons live in zoos in Europe. In nature, they are found in the islands of Indonesia (Komodo, Rinca, Flores, etc.). Live on these small territories between 3000 and 5000. Their main threat is indirect. Their main prey, deer Javanese, is hunted extensively. Antwerp Zoo, along with other parks in Europe, is supporting a project in situ in the Wae Wuul reserve on the island of Flores. This project ensures that the reserve is regularly patrolled by park wardens and the public is educated and aware of the threat to the lizards.

Born (from official news items, non-reptiles):

2 Brown-nosed coatis
7 Nutrias
1 Reindeer
2 Australian magpies
11 Humboldt penguins
2 Macaroni penguins
3 Waldrapp ibis
3 (?) Great Cormorant
? Crested Wood-partridge

Movements:

Malayan tapir Nico moved to Prague. From Edinburgh a young male, Kamal, arrived.
A new female Californian sealion brings the group at 7.
The last okapi from Wuppertal moved to Antwerp. The new male, Henry, would replace his brother Libembe, I think.
From Basel, 1.1 King penguins arrived. Later on this year a few males goes to Hamburg.
The Kirk’s Dik-diks moved in the Zoo from the Egyptian Temple to the new okapi exhibit.

In a few weeks, the new Lions of the Kalahari Desert exhibit, will be ready.

The opening of the new African Lion / Meerkat / Yellow Mongoose exhibit is delayed due to some circumstances. At least in August the animals must be visible for the public, for now.
