Yorkshire Wildlife Park Any updates?

A few of us met up there last Sunday - we had a good day (and some very good pie) but got thoroughly drenched!

A few updates:

- the Guayaquil Squirrels have been taken off show and will be sent to another collection - YWP are trying to avoid any 'caged' exhibits

- Addax still on the African Plains, Guanaco paddock not yet complete

- the female Chapman's Zebra was being treated for a leg problem

- the birds in for the falconry show included a Verraux's Eagle - always nice to see (won't be there every time though, I'd imagine)

- there is a new toilet block down near the camels

- behind the camels is a new covered shelter overlooking the wetland area - for now this is being kept as a nature reserve

EDIT: Just remembered - I seem to recall someone questioning if there were still two Raccoon Dogs - I can confirm there most certainly are!

I'm glad you saw them both, those two old girls are real favourites of mine.

I haven't been for a couple of months, so am planned in for half term. (joys of being a teacher I'm afraid!).

Even though its a small place as its only about 50 mins from i try to go as often as ican. We've been going since the park first opened, and I've really enjoyed watching it grow

There have been at least 2 new lechwe born this year (I always count them in your honour lechweoryx) :-)

The female zebra died, she sustained some severe injuries whilst the male was attempting to mate with her.

Arthur the meerkat did say on Facebook this week that there were new people around :o

They did mention a few months ago getting Asian antelope as part of a deal to get (I think) a male breeding camel.

Disclaimer - all information has been passed through the sieve that I call a memory.

I'm hoping to go if it's open Monday or Tuesday.

update

There's quite a lot going on at the moment. The flamingo's have arrived and are in a holding pen next to the duckpond until they settle in and there's what looks to be a new play area being built in the wooded area next to the red river hogs.

There's some agouti's in quarantine just waiting for an enclosure to be built and capybara's are said to be on their way as well.

The big news though is the planning applications that have just recently been approved. There's to be a raised walkway across the wetlands area, a new enclosure and housing for further hoofed stock (no details on what yet though) and the big one, a new big cat enclosure for tigers. Can't wait!

The shop is in the process of being moved in to the big green shed next to the kids slide. I went the other day and only one set of lions were out with the lake almost completely frozen over. Always worth a visit though, and with all the plans in store it looks like being an exciting 2011.

YWP plans

attached are the exciting plans for YWP as mentioned above, and an idea of how things will shape up next year. For anyone who's already visited the park, the plains of africa and camel enclosure marked on the map will give you an idea of where this will be.

Exactly the same set up already is in place at Bristol zoo. Though I would like to see the plans for YWP as no doubt the enclosure will be HUGE!
