Yorkshire Wildlife Park Any updates?

It's somewhere to the rear of the leopard observation tower looking from the toilet block near to the childrens' play area. I only know because a kind gentleman in a hi vis jacket told me. :)

Ah- thanks I think I know where you mean, there was some development there on Saturday the Leopard enclosure looks fantastic and I spotted one pacing near Vladimir the Tiger's enclosure.

Just noticed on the website in the piece about the tigers meeting & getting on well it says "Now YWP will prepare to welcome another pair of tigers..."

Disappointingly someone told me that Sayan is having an implant so no tiger cubs anytime soon - although she's not even 4 so I guess she is too young - I was thinking she was going on 5.

If they do get more I wonder if they'd be Amur or if hey could have any others? Are there rules like with lions!

There's nothing holding them from holding two types/species of Tiger. A few Zoo's in the UK currently hold both Amur and Sumatran. If YWP did acquire a Sumatran then they'd probably have a young or old animal to start with so they could get used to there husbandry etc. They are very similar to Amurs but also very similar.

Nowt like hedging your bets hey :D

It's always nice to have different species of tiger in a collection to highlight differences/similarities.

Sayan isn't much younger than Kirana at Chester - not sure her youth is a real explaination for implanting her? Vlad is a young tiger though so maybe they need to read a couple of tiger educational books just to make sure they know what they are doing :D

Kirana was born in 2006, Sayan in 2008. ;)

The people who told me she'd been implanted subsequently said someone told them they are too lowly to be allowed to breed!? Shame if so cos Vlad is a looker!

They might have been not recommended to breed. Looking at Vlad and Sayan's genetic line, they have been a lot of cubs born. Vlad is one of the nine cubs born to Sasha and Yuri, Sayan was born to Nika (Ex Marwell) the Marwell pair had four cubs (Three surviving) plus Sayan has two brothers one has which recently bred, so there is still time the time might just not be now. :)

Was there today and the ranger said they are hoping they will breed soon?!

Also said Giraffes for September. And theu have some more squirrel monkeys in quaranteen they hope to let out soon - they are a bit older and a bit bigger apparently.

Re Sayan and Vlad

Spoke with one of the keepers today and she understands there is a possibility they may be distantly related, hence the contraception for Sayan. With so few left, it wouldn't be so surprising. Shame! There may be better luck with the new tigers, when they arrive.

Incidentally, work still continues on the leopard enclosure. Hopefully, it is just cosmetic at this stage and won't affect the grand opening in Easter.

Was an absolute belter of a day today - marmosets were swarming all over their tree, capybaras taking a dip and maras basking in the sun. Ring-tailed lemurs were also busily eating the buds on the trees in their compound.

Just to add, I did eavesdrop on a conversation taking place outside the squirrel monkey enclosure where it appears there is some superiority thing going on. Whether this is something to do with the integration of the others in quarantine, I can only speculate.

The new eating area and restaurant/cafe near to the Forest Park are coming on apace, as is the extension to the patio/ eating area just beyond the main entrance.

Interesting times.

I have wondered how many years those trees will survive the attention of the lemurs!

Thanks for the tiger specifics! I wonder if they'll just not breed from either of them or move one on or get them new mate(s).

Apparently, genetically Vlad is the best bet for breeding, if he can be paired with an unrelated tigress that is..........;-)

Vladimir's parents are Sasha and Yuri. I believe Yuri died in 2010, and Sasha died within the last few weeks. Sasha's parents were a wild caught pair hence the reason Vlad is so important.

Sayan's parents are Nika and Malchek. Both of which are still at Howletts, Nika was Marwell born (Yenna X Gamin) and Malchek was born at Port Lympne/Howletts.

I can't see there being any relation between Sayan and Vladimir unless there six or seventh cousins. There may however be a simpler explanation in that the EEP are keeping Sayan and Vladimir together for company until they are recommended to breed.
