Apenheul Primate Park Apenheul Primate Park News

I am glad that he had some more quality years and left an super important legacy in the one baby gorilla he managed to sire at Apenheul that adds his genes to the global captive population!

It will be interesting to know what happens next with his old troupe of gorillas..!
His old troupe is now just two females and his son Kiango. I've heard he was a very quiet male and Gyasi ,the female who conceived Kiango, was the instigator of mating. I think they will be able to (eventually) integrate them as a single group.

Apenheul has started the introduction process to join their two gorilla groups. Following the death of old silverback Bao Bao last month they noticed interest between the two groups as well as unrest possibly affecting the welfare of the animals. After careful preparations they are now starting the introduction process. While this is ongoing the gorillas will be temporarily off-show to the public, although staff will be holding presentations about the gorillas. The introduction will be done carefully and it is not known how long it will take.

Introductions are going well, the whole group has been kept together over the weekend. Today, the whole group is going to be let outside. Apenheul states: "We expect some time to pass before the new situation feels familiar to every individual, but on the whole, keepers are happy with the developments."

Woah, this development is going fast! I expected this introduction to take some weeks based on their previous message.

Sharing this picture made by an Apenheul Zookeeper to show the progression made on the introductions. All the individuals attended the gorilla feedings this monday and I think the team in Apenheul is deserving of some praise for bringing this group together like this.

I have a small scoop from visiting Apenheul today: at least two gabon talapoins were born at Apenheul on / around the 27th of June. I saw two little newborns today. :) There was signing, but no more specifics.

I also saw a recently newborn Squirrle Monkey in addition to the two Apenheul communicated about in May. :)

In an Apenheul newsletter it's mentioned that the island where Bao Bao's group used to live has been adjusted for a group of squirrle monkeys. There's now nine individuals living over there. (I wonder how these nine were selected. Time out place for squirrle monkeys that raided the most strollers?? ;) )

My best guess would be surpluss males that get a beter enclosure than those behind the scenes but jail for strollerthieves is as good a guess as any.

A bit strange since this used to belong to the yellow-breasted capuchins. I'd expect them to move back in

Hi , i'm visiting with my nephew this friday. I saw on zootierliste.de that with a visit the blackbearded saki's weren't seen nor signed. Has anybody seen them (and where are they ?) ?

They are still mentioned on the website. Including the fact there was a birth in 2023

The bearded sakis are still definitely there, I saw them just yesterday. They're on a separate island in the squirrel monkey forest (the first walkthrough area)

Sadly, 20-year-old Samboja has passed away. Two weeks before giving birth, the keepers noticed that Samboja was not feeling well. After the birth, her health deteriorated: she barely ate or drank, despite the intensive care provided by her keepers and the vet.

Her newborn young, a female, is doing reasonably well under the circumstances. In consultation with the European population management programme, they are looking at how the young can receive the best care.

Apenheul has provided an update on the young orangutan. She is doing very well, gaining weight and drinking more and more. Apenheul hopes to find a mother orangutan who is feeding her own young and will hopefully accept this youngster. Together with the EEP coordinator, a suitable place is being sought. This will allow the youngster to grow up in conditions that are as natural as possible. To prepare the young orangutan for this, the animal carers are doing daily exercises with her to develop her muscles.

It has now become clear that mother Samboja has died of severe pneumonia with complications.

Apenheul will play a key role in the breeding programme for the blue-eyed black lemur. There are nineteen of these animals living in European zoos. Apenheul, together with Zoo Mulhouse in France, has been appointed as the zoo where these lemurs will be brought together to increase their chances of reproduction. With the arrival of new animals, Apenheul now houses five of these lemurs.

I hope they'll build a larger enclosure since the current one isn't all that big, especially not for a larger group

I believe there are also some enclosures behind the scenes. In the past, they have had a larger number of animals, and I don't think they were all kept in the enclosure that is visible to visitors.
